Hello /lit/, here's a few more titles I converted from PDF to a more e-reader friendly format, some requested from the previous thread. I hate terrible conversions, so I went through them very carefully and I must say they ended up pretty good.

The Consumer - Michael Gira
>http://www.mediafire.com/file/sql0jrqrp41r9ps/The_Consumer_-_Michael_Gira_v1.0.epub
>http://www.mediafire.com/file/9sb565fdoneqwcz/The_Consumer_-_Michael_Gira_v1.0.azw3

I'm taking requests again, preferably obscure or dark/depressive literature (books should be below 200 pages, searchable PDF is preferred). No promises.

The NYRB edition isn't available as an ebook and apparently has an introduction and some unpublished notes by Cendrars on how he went about writing the book.

I go over every book multiple times trying to weed out any text issues. The software recognizes suspicious characters (like a Cone where it should read Gone, Pm instead or I'm, weird punctuations) and I verify antything unusual. Then I do a couple grammar/spelling check passes to catch any errors that might have seeped through.
I put special emphasis on split/compound words and punctuation though. Paragraphs, scene/chapter breaks, run on sentences missing a coma or a dot, dialogues that are hard to follow if they're not broken into separate lines, etc. I do this manually by skimming the whole text and comparing side by side to the original and through a ton of regular expressions. This part of the process took me at least 6 hours.
All in all, it should be 90+% close to what you could expect from a commercial copy. Unfortunately, proofreading the whole thing in detail would take days.

Here's an update on the quality. I read 50 pages of this and run into 1 single incorrect word (modem instead of modern) and 2 missing opening quote marks which hardly made it unreadable. I thought some of the longer passages were definitely missing a coma, but upon checking the original PDF they're just like the originals.

>>15452764
This one has some weird formatting (like marked out words) which I'm not sure you can replicate that in an e-reader. Not to shit on the book but it seems kind of a luxury for all the work involved, sorry.
>>15452781
I don't use Calibre because it sucks for that particular conversion.
I run the pdfs through ABBYY Finereader which does the OCR. This produces a Word document full of unnecessary styles but mostly corrected text (you can use ABBYY to export as epub but I don't trust it).
In MS Word I do the editing and most of the fixing, line breaks and all that. I don't touch the styles because reformatting is very inconsistent and I don't want to lose things like italicized words and that kind of thing. Save it as filtered HTML, then it goes into Sigil to make the epub, where most of the work is consolidating the html/css so it reads well on any device. Add TOC, medatada, covers and all that.
I only use Calibre to convert the epub to AZW3/MOBI.

I don't know how the original looked like but here's a few tips.
Download Sigil to improve formatting. You can do a ton of search/replace with some basic css to prettify the book.
Justified looks better and is the standard for most ebooks/printed books. There's a justify property in the css but it's not applied to the text (it's all aligned to the left).
No paragraph margins because books hardly have any noticeable spacing between paragraphs.
For this reason, most books have some text-indent to help guide the eye.
Kindles seem to hate horizontal margins. For example a quote, a poem or an epigraph. It's better to use a blockquote with a class assigned.

They're a bit more complex than that, but yeah. An epub is basically a zip folder with many files, the book's metadata, TOC data, images, etc and the book pages (rename any epub to .zip and you'll have access to the files and contents of the books). The book pages/chapters are basically just html and css, the css can be declared in the html tags or referenced as a stylesheet (like any web page does).

Most softwares, Calibre, converted files from Word, Sigil, all do a somewhat decent job and you can always use other epubs as a reference. I just like to go a little autistic in recreating the look of the original, etc.

It's pretty basic stuff. At most you'd be dealing with a few tags, like headings (h1, h2, etc), blockquote, div, p, span, img and links.

You can learn most of this stuff in a day. Just pirate ABBYY or OmnipagePro to do the OCR and the software will guide you most of the way in fixing some errors. You can even edit and format the text in MS Word with some search/replace and regular expressions, which is where you have to be careful not to mess the text too much (it's hard to go back before you make a mistake). If you don't care about a TOC or fancy stuff, you can save that as a .rft and convert it to .epub through Calibre.
It just takes a lot of time and patience to get right.

This one's very tricky in its current state because the exported epub stripped the text of all identifying styles and paragraph marks, so I would need to go over every single line and style it manually. It's just not very feasible.

Do you think you could zip the ABBYY "Finereader document" and upload it? It's a big file but it would be ideal because I could also search the text.

Thanks!
Got rid of the pages numbers and headers, fixed a ton of typos and used Sigil to add a catalog.
The only thing that I don't think that I am even try to fix are notes and the index, that is too long.
Now the only details that I could find are some strange line breaks (unless there is an automatic way to do it), but nothing that should make reading it too difficult so here it is

The book or the OCR? If the first sorry, the second I tried to fix it see above.

If anyone have something short (30-70 pages) that wants to get OCR I probably can do it tomorrow or this Friday.

You're right, it wasn't exported properly, apparently the Finereader version that I'm using is different from yours. Here's a better .docx file:

This was way too much work desu. I should've checked it first lol. I noticed some issues with the OCR (like a few wrong characters or a couple sentences that were moved out of order in the more stupidly formatted pages) but I fixed anything that caught my eye. Proofreading it in full would be the end of me.
I normally align the text to justify but I opted not to because the original was aligned to the right (probably due to the fact it had 2 columns per page and it would look bloody awful and hardly readable).

I'm not so sure about those Lovecrafts letters now.

Humbly requesting you take a look at Impro: Improvisation and the Theater
I've had this recommended to me multiple times only to ignore it because it's too expensive where I live.

Other than that thanks for all the work. I've been looking for a nice version of Moravagine for a while.
There are a lot of good books which for some reasons you don't seem to find online in a good format.

Found this penguin edition "Maldoror and Poems"

https://mega.nz/file/ZtpzGZgB#UtCvUDeoXYPQp1S4xdyq3T3i7TzepU6eM--EzHSBR3M

There is a version on libgen but it's badly formatted. I found the better one on "the eye". Pro tip, if you can't find what you're looking for on Libgen and #ebooks, just search for it in here: https://the-eye.eu/public/Books/Bibliotik/
Just keep in mind that sometimes the books begins with the author's name, and sometimes with the book name, this one I found under "C" for Comte de Lautréamont, and not by "M" for Maldoror.

About £70. I haven't owned one before precisely because I wasn't sure if the technology had reached the point of not fucking up peoples eyes yet. Like, it would take a while for the actual cases to start showing up.

It seems pretty improbable, they don't emit light at all, even those with light are frontlights not backlight so your eyes are not getting blasted.
Its not that different that staring at paper really, and kobos and other readers have the option to turn the screen yellow for extra comfyness, change the font, etc.
I got a chinese one because I have the tism and only kindles are locally aviable where I live, but anything with e ink should be fine.

The Penguin one (Paul Knight), an annotated Exact Change edition (Alexis Lykiard) which is the one I read, and also a New Directions one (Guy Wernhan). Here's the latter:

Worked today on another one, using libreoffice and sigil I got a better result, also tried using a css from standardebooks and really make it look better.

The Sex Appeal Of The Inorganic - Mario Perniola
https://files.catbox.moe/t5jwfd.zip

>An organic sexuality, based on sex difference and driven by desire and pleasure, is being replaced by a neutral, inorganic and artificial sexuality, a sexuality always available but indifferent to beauty, age or form, a sexuality freed by thought from nature.

Looks fairly good and perfectly serviceable. Here's a few more advanced tips for going full autismo mode.

- Every chapter/section should be its own html page. This makes the TOC and any links work more consistently across devices. First delete all section breaks in LibreOffice/Word (there's a dedicated special char for them). Then insert manual page breaks (ctrl + enter) at the end of each chapter (or just replace those section breaks with page breaks with search/replace). Later, in Sigil, those line breaks which will be transformed into some html tag. So you'll want to you'll want to search replace them with
><hr class="sigil_split_marker" />
or add a Split marker manually and when you're done editing everything, go to Edit->Split at markers.

- Always check for wrong line breaks.
I do this on Word most of the time, but basically it's
>([a-zA-Z]>)^13(<[a-zA-Z]) -> \1 \2
This will catch things like "hi<line break>there" and make it one single paragraph. That's the basic line and it all depends on how it's exported from the OCR soft. Sometimes you'll have to check if there are 2 line breaks between words, or if there's a space before the line break character, or if a line is split after a optional hyphen or a comma ("[a-z]-^13" or "[a-z],^13").

- Always check for stray page numbers and stuff. Sometimes it's hard to catch them if you use a very vague search expression, but since books usually don't have many numbers on them it's easy to find them and identify the pattern.

- If you're doing any aggressive search replace and plan to do a blind replace all, it's better to refine the query on a copy of the file so you don't mess it too much.

- In Sigil, I like to work on a single html page converted from Word, or in your case, LibreOffice. You can later copy everything in between the html body tags and paste it on an blank xhtml and finally Split. This way I don't have to copypaste the charset, the <title> tags or the css reference across several files.

- Words in italics are usually converted as a <span> inside a <p> tag with their own class, e.g., "somethingItalic". In your epub, you have this part
><span class="span2">Du culte des dieuxfetiches</span>
but since you never declared any css attributes (font-style: italic;) for the "span2" class, it shows like regular text. Most css sheets will have an "i" class with just the font style attribute so you can multiclass (e,g., p class="noindent i").

- Making a TOC is super easy. MOBI doesn't like h3, h4, so if you plan to have nested sections (like "Section 1, chapter 2") better save it as azw3 or it's better to just use h1, h2.
In Sigil, first you have to Generate, then Create Html TOC, then Edit. Here you can add other sections without heading tags (h1, h2, etc) like the copyright page, cover, notes, etc. Once everything's set, Create HTML TOC one more time so it updates any changes.
