You might have some luck with Aristotle. He rarely transcends into vague areas so most of his ideas are basic yet solid. Also, if you want to understand why mathematics makes you think that way but nothing else does, read Kant's 1st Critique (or at least the final section on the architectonic of sciences). To summarise why, without ever doing justice to Kant:

Biology, Physics and Chemistry are quite sensible and worthy of study. The Dead by James Joyce is probably the most sensible story ever written. He's basically speaking perfectly enclosed, higher-order language.
