Any good gothic/dark fantasy books to read?

Dark Souls is unironically better dark fantasy than any book

>> No.15433760

Just give me some recommendations for God’s sake instead of shilling that dogshit. Dark Souls is overrated trash and you know it.

not him but it's an excellent dark fairy tale that people seem to overhype for all the wrong reasons

>> No.15433781

Unironically Frankenstein. It's really good, and it gives off pretty powerful dark fantasy vibes. Watching Victor's life and the life of everyone around him slowly get destroyed and corrupted and ruined is all the dark fantasy you'll need, and lots of the book takes place in dramatic European landscapes.

Jesus, just give OP some books that aren’t from the fucking 18th century for Christ’s sake. That’s the equivalent to giving someone in their 20a high school level books.

>> No.15433866

Goddamn, why is finding gothic stuff that isn’t romantic bullshit or from the 17/18th century so fucking hard?

>> No.15434469

Your thread is shit and you sound like a whiny, poorly socialized teenager. Fuck the books, you'd probably benefit much more from going outside.

I'm reading Titus Groan right now and it fits that description pretty well. The world it takes place in is dark and somber, as are most of the characters. If you like medieval fantasy I'd recommend it, although it's not really traditional fantasy in that there are no magic spells or wizards.

Because that was the heyday of the "Gothic" ideal. Gothic literature is an offshoot of the Romantic movement. It shouldn't be surprising that a lot of the best Gothic stuff comes from that period.

Pic related is essentially a Gothic novel in a somewhat contemporary setting (post-war Britain)

"Gothic" fiction is essentially just Byron fanfiction, Byron is literally the base model for every Gothic hero ever.

This is true. People focus on "hhurr durr its hard" and over look it's fantastic lore, superior level design (DS1), and attention to detail that's on par with something like MGS3

As a book, I am under the impression that The Phantom of the Opera is overlooked. Most people who are aware of The Phantom of the Opera refer to either a stage or film adaptation, whereas there was an original book, all along.

Came here to post this. If you have any interest in the military as well, Cook manages an extremely authentic transposition of the mentality of grunts in combat. I read the entire series cover to cover multiple times in deployment.
