He's the fucking GOAT and he knew it. Dante's rendering of the afterlife - the structure, the allegories, the interweaving of personal, historical, and mythical connections - is as precise and as masterful as the poetry itself. His so-called "self-insert" is the essence of a poet with encyclopedic knowledge of the classics and the medieval world. He is peerless in his time and ours.
