What does /lit/ think about pic related? I am about halfway through it and had no idea just how based America’s founding fathers were and how much much of an impact our communication mediums have on our actual culture and way of discourse.

Alex Turned liked it and was an influence in the Monkeys' latest album. Haven't read it but would like to.

It’s a short book. Less than 190 pages. I would highly recommend it

The chapter about pre-revolution America is my favorite

Good book, but I recently read it a second time and I disagree more with him now, because he doesn't go far enough in his critique.

I've been hesitating to read it because I get the idea that the book is outdated since it was written before the internet and social media, but maybe his other books like Technopoly are better?

It’s not outdated at all. It’s more relevant than ever. Many parts of the book which were written in sarcasm actually came to fruition

It's not really outdated, most of the things he talks about can be easily projected onto current times. My problem is that I've since read stuff like Ellul, Spengler, Ted, and I feel Postman is right about a lot of observations, but still naively optimistic about some aspects of mass media. Still a good book like I said earlier, and Technopoly is on my to-read list as well.

Are there any books like it specifically about the internet age, written post 2000? I enjoyed it but I want something focused on the internet

Too bad Fisher isn’t around to analyze the current situation we’re in. Would be great to hear his take on it.

I think this was the book that talked about news and "news"
How local news that directly affects you is actually important and real news.
Anything that doesn't directly affect you is entertainment.

>> No.15398845

I lived with someone who did nothing in his free time but watch television and film. No hobbies, other than playing on his phone and watching endless television shows. Completely wasted his brain, literally afraid of everything, if there was a knock at the door he was worried that "it was someone trying to come in and rape/murder him". He had to frame everything in terms of a film, like when walking down an alley (in the middle of the day) would turn to me and say "this is creepy everyone always gets murdered in an alley in the movies"). Absolute waste of a mind

Yes, that is one of his central points. He cites the magnetic telegram and how it connected states like Maine and Texas only to discover the two have nothing worth sharing. He defines information as “actionable information” which basically boils down to the weather, local crime statistics, and finance. Everything else is entertainment

An already anxious individual whose watching habits were mostly those violent cop shows CSI/9-11 etc. Disliked others and had his own violent fascinations. Which was a strange juxaposition with his complete love for all things Disney

Okay, but does he have any unique insights, or is he repeating what previous critics of tech and media said before him?

Well it's not a criticism of tech in general but more that everything in media has become entertainment. I didn't think he had many super original takes, but it was eye-opening when I first read it a few years ago.
