If this is your first time reading the Bible, I recommend reading a study Bible.

avoid the KJV/DR because of corrupted sources and subtly "slanted" translations like the ESV/CSB/NASB. The NABRE/NRSV retains 90% of the poetic structure, I assure you, except this time it's accurate. Knox is a fantastic translation in its own right and provides many innovative and faithful readings (as well as retaining Jerome's unique readings that are valuable)

NABRE because It's what you'll hear at Mass
NRSV for a more protestant/American reading
Knox because it's my favorite and the best for an English reader that doesn't know Latin or Greek or Hebrew.

The majority/received text is eclectic too as it was compiled from multiple manuscripts and no single one reads exactly like the compilations. The Alexandrian manuscripts were still present throughout the world, just the western early modern compilers weren't aware of them. The Catholic Church even possessed one of the most prominent ones but it wasn't made available to the compilers. Back then only a little over a dozen manuscripts were known of. Now thousands are known of.

I prefer the King James Version because of it's rich history and because it is widely used in churches today. I would also consider using a Geneva Bible or even the Bishops' Bible if they were just as widely used. They are not perfect translations, but I think all translations have their issues and it's part of the clergy's duty to explain and teach how things were translated from the originals into the languages we speak today.
