Hey /lit/,

Just finished reading Fight Club. Excellent book, and as usual, better than the film adaptation.

>Jack met Tyler on a beach, not on an airplane
>Equal parts cat litter/gasoline = bomb
>Killed his boss
>etc.

So, I really want to read more from Mr. Palahniuk. What should I read next? Choke looks really good.

Thoughts?

>> No.1537785

Invisible Monsters is good. Choke was fun.

The problem with his books is that the main character is always a mix between Tyler Durden and The Narrator. I stopped reading his stuff once I realized he was writing the same book over and over.

I read this a month ago after putting it aside for ages and, well, the movie is better. I guess it's easy to say that though considering how big that movie is now and also that this was his first novel. I just didn't like his style. I'll check out another book of his though, it wasn't awful.

You are. Always saying the book is better than the movie even when it's clearly not is a hipster trait. Hipsters try to look original and smart even though they are actually boring and stupid. That's why hipsters like Chuck P so much. His books are all the same: cliche characters, watered-down psychology, unnecessary profanity, and shitty, unoriginal writing. Hipsters read Chuck P so they can look smart without having to read anything challenging.

I agree about the movie. When I read the book I noticed lines from the film, but they were in different places or slightly different. It's like the movie cleaned it all up. The book has great ideas and some awesome one liners, but I don't think they were delivered as well as they could be, as well as in the movie.

I wouldn't rave about Chuck based on Fight Club. I will read more though because it has a lot of things I like in it.

>> No.1537858

Chuck is awful. But ironically, his list of influences is pretty good. If you read Chuck's books and would like to start reading good books instead, try Denis Johnson, for example. Chuck likes him a lot, but unlike Chuck, Denis Johnson is what we refer to as a "writer" of fiction.

I really enjoyed Chuck P's books. However, I only starting reading them after I had seen Fight Club, so every narrator had Edward Norton's monotone Fight Club voice. It fit surprisingly well for most of the books. Only in some of his more recent books does Chuck start to deviate from his tried and true formula. Namely Rant and Pigmy. I would suggest Lullaby after Fight Club. Survivor is another one of my favorites.

Not same guy, and I think both the book and the movie are great (the book was a bit better because it went more indepth but I really liked the cinematography in the movie, also) but there's no doubt at all that Fight Club has VERY watered down philosophy.

It's presented well in the movie and book, but it's not very indepth or intelligent. Both don't bother explaining the philosophy very much. It's really just basic anti-consumerism with a bit of nihilism, but the way they portray makes it seem like they're fighting the system for the sake of fighting the system, they don't bother going very far indepth.

The movie is known as the classic pseudo-intellectual movie teenagers love as a stepping stone for the real stuff.

Just saying.

Read Rant. I will lend you my copy, OP.

You thought The Prestige randomly turns into a sci-fi story. Just you wait, sir.

>I JUST READ THE CONTORTIONIST'S HANDBOOK BECAUSE CHUCK TWEETED THAT IT WAS THE BEST SHIT HE'S READ IN YEARS. I HAVE A BONER.

if you like Chuck you must read his Survivor

main character is the only surviving member of a suicidal cult, story begins with him in the cockpit of a plane as it's crashing, telling his story to the black box recorder

really interesting book to say the least

You do realize that philosophy can be used as a literary aesthetic, and is not only in books to "provoke thought and change the world"? Some people like philosophy just because it's cool.

I personally enjoyed Lullaby and Haunted, though Survivor stuck with me for some reason. I had about 3 months in college where I just inhaled Palahniuk.

I think he's all right.

I read that book when I was 15, before there was twitter, because a quote from Chuck Pahluniuk was on the cover.

I met the author at a reading too. He seems like a boring, boring man.
