There's like 10 or so

They're very well researched historical fiction told from the perspective of an antihero (originally the bully character in a 19thC British school novel)

Basically he becomes involved in various 19thC conflicts and earns a reputation for being a brave and gallant soldier while actually being a terrible person and total coward

I think theres a distinction of periods of pynchon; pre- and post-vineland. The books before vineland like lot 49 and GR are great in their own way, in that they did things for literature that weren't really being done like that, but they were more focused on a kind of postmodern cleverness that sometimes gets in the way of the narrative imo. His books after vineland (which contains his best work - mason and dixon) retain a lot of the postmodern suspicion of grand narratives but with a renewed focus on actually developing interesting, complex characters. I cried at the chapter of m&d when they're old men visiting each other.

I am still early on, ~100 pages in. I've mostly spent those wrapping my head around what he means by "technique." I think there is something lost in translation between the French and the English. I think a better phrase in English would be "technical method." But once you have an understanding of that, I think it becomes easy to see the orientation towards technique in so many parts of western society thanks to his examples through history.

Overall, it has more of a historical approach than I was expecting, at least to this point. I think I was prepared for more of a philosophical/political text. Nonetheless, I am finding it interesting.

>> No.15371565

>>15371432
I think he meant to be careful with the historical starting points and that's why it drags on through that topic for a bit. It becomes more focused on the current era relatively soon after the first 100 pages or so. Some of his handling of history seems shaky to me -- specifically the conditions which allow "technique" to arise seem like a selective reading and, of course, his emphasis on the contributions of France seem a bit overblown. Something like "technical method" seems a bit more appropriate perhaps in English but yeah, the collective body of techno-scientific approaches to organization and problem solving seems more or less what he is getting at.

agree wrt the somewhat selective reading of history and his parochial focus on france and england. perhaps he uses these because he believes his audience is likely to be most acquainted with those technical histories, and discussion of those thus provides him with the lowest friction way to introduce his analytical methods and structures. but the idea that "eastern" societies were not ever interested in seizing upon technical advancement in any of the five avenues he identifies as intersecting in the rise of the modern technical society seems ahistorical to me, although admittedly I am not a historian by any means

I am not an historian either but I think the endemic conflict in European societies was at least some kind of driver of technical development. As he mentions at some point early on, military technique is one of the oldest and most highly developed. But I think there was a lot of chance factors that converged at the right time. Once societies stepped on the first rung of the ladder of technique I think Ellul would argue (probably rightly) that there is no going backward. It takes on a kind of natural law type logic.

I just picked up the Modern Library set since I got furloughed for a while. It's the Moncrieff/Kilmartin translation.

While it can be exhausting and tedious during certain stretches, it has been one of my most rewarding reading experiences yet. His sentences are often convoluted, which requires a lot of concentration if you're not used to longwinded writing, but if you just let it sort of flow off the page and eliminate distractions there is profundity everywhere. He also makes great use of short sentences once in a while, aphorisms or not, that tend to reinforce his elaborations quite succinctly. Proust endlessly ponders memory, sensory input, aesthetics, social customs, and internal emotions (and yes, lots and lots of flowers) in a way that seemingly explores the entire gradation of whatever he is talking about. It is unbelievable that a person could sit down and write what he did while not experiencing all of those things recently enough to naturally think of them. It really shows that he had an immense intellectual capacity and an almost unmatched aesthetic compass. Sure, some sections drag a bit, but so far it has been an extreme pleasure to read.

I dropped the Naked and the Dead about halfway through. It’s jam packed full of exposition, with too many characters.

George MacDonald is a beast. I've only read through the Evenor collection and The Marquis' Secret without realizing it was from the same author. It's nice to know he handles both fantasy and period pieces with such jauntiness.

Also reading through this. Sad it sold so little. It tackles metaphysical descriptors and explores various philosophies really well for a fun read. The Gnostic allusions the author unintentionally provokes actually reinforce the fantastical elements (names and places) with sincerity, as opposed to being intended plug-ins.

Honestly, I just find the description of the era and locations immersive as hell which is the biggest reason it's holding my interest so well. The characters' interactions between one another are also just about always fun to read as each has their distinctive personality. There's also an overarching theme related to the nature of humanity being fairly unchanging over time which I find interesting. Overall, it's very tightly written (by which I mean every word serves a clear purpose).

I've yet to finish it but so far I'd highly recommend reading the first 30-50 pages to see if it grabs a hold of you as it did me.

I was halfway through Swann's Way but we got bedbugs and I shoved everything in my room in a garbage bag, sealed it off, and put it in a storage unit where it will stay for a year.
Should I order another copy or wait it out?

Complete Fiction of H.P. Lovecraft.

The thing is fucking huge. About 1100 pages, all the extra stuff included, and I'm only in mid-700s (The Whisperer in Darkness), after already having spent a couple of months reading it.

Some of the "racist" stuff in it is definitely worth at least raising an eyebrow. Otherwise, the stuff is good.
