This is propaganda.

There are so many reasons why Penguin is the worst publisher and should not be celebrated here.

1. For philosophy/nonfiction, they consistently have the worst translations but due to their wide distribution these are often the most frequently read. They promote bad texts.

2. Their spines are some of the weakest and most susceptible to wear and tear. Ever see the spin of a finished penguin book? It's junk. The cracks that necessarily come with Penguins should make any reader despair.

3. Their paper quality is garbage. Of all the cheap paper back publishers, Penguin's is by far the most susceptible to water damage and tearing. They are stiff, cheap, thin pieces of cardboard. The waves that Penguin pages morph into upon any contact with water ruins the book forever.

The saddest thing is that they used to be fine. I can't really look at the new 'black' classics without knowing I'm basically being ripped off by people who organised a meeting where they sat down and made a conscious decision to reduce quality to the point where it's impossible to preserve the book and increase the price at the same time. There is no reason they should be badly constructed at that price point but isn't the cover design ICONIC. LOOK HOW ICONIC IT IS. HERE'S ANOTHER BLOG POST ABOUT HOW ICONIC IT IS. NONONO, JUST LOOK AT THE COVER. THE ICONIC COVER. WE HIRED SOME ICONIC GRAPHIC DESIGNERS TO MAKE IT EVEN MORE ICONIC.

I'd like some evidence for that, but I would surmise that most philosophical texts have serious translation issues; I'm not sure why Penguin would be the worst.

>>15366022
>2. Their spines
That is partly true, though for specific books where the spine is soft, you don't actually break it eventually, because the book can be left open and you don't have to force anything. It's true of older Penguin books, BUT remember that Penguin's aim is to make the cheapest books possible, and because they are still very classy, you suddenly expect them to be top-tier stuff, and you forget that Penguin's original and current aim is to make affordable books for the people.

>>15366022
>3. Their paper quality is garbage. Of all the cheap paper back publishers, Penguin's is by far the most susceptible to water damage and tearing. They are stiff, cheap, thin pieces of cardboard. The waves that Penguin pages morph into upon any contact with water ruins the book forever.
It sounds like you haven't touched a Penguin book in 20 years. Seriously, go molest a current day Penguin volume because everything you say was true decades ago. Paper quality is great now, not stuff at all, and it lasts and doesn't yellow with time.

As to water, most books don't deal well with encountering water.

You must fuck with this book.

Reading French poetry in English, that alone makes me feel physically ill. I hope 80% of that volume is Baudelaire and the rest is Eluard. And by "Eluard", I mean a few of his lines. I dislike most of his poems (the ones I read) but he has the three best poetic lines of the universe.

I still think the cover is great, but it certainly fits 1950 far more than 1820. That's an odd choice of years.

Last one is my favourite in all of poetry.

Et je ne sais plus, tant je t'aime, lequel de nous deux est parti.
>And I no longer know, the way I love you, which one of us is gone.

I took some liberty with this one because "tant je t'aime" is hard to translate without sounding stupid as fuck in English. A more literal translation would give "so much that I love you".
