Has anyone on /lit read that book of Job? I'm a little confused right now. This is what i got from it

>God is an asshole who sends satan to take everything away from Job
>God expects ???????????
>Job's mind is full of fuck, he is depressed with reason
>Job questions Gods doings
>Jobs friends "console" him, ask him what else he expects from god who is the last word
>God is like WTF You will never understand me, because i am god
>God gives everything back to Job

What am i missing here? This is supposed to be one of the greatest pieces of western literature, and all i can get from it is that God can do what he wants because you are man and he is god.
Anyone care to digress?

I think that it's supposed to be comforting to people - that in your misery you still must show reverence to God because in the end you're really an insignificant worm. Coming to that realization I think is similar to realizing your own worthlessness in the grand scheme of things so it's actually pretty existential in a way. I'm not religious but I think the Bible contains some very interesting portions about the nature of man and his relation to the rest of the universe, and I've always liked the Book of Job.

the book of Job is essentially: if you have a shitty life, it's just god testing your faith

I think it's more "God doesn't owe you shit" - which is a more interesting proposition and a little disquieting for some people.

that's the take-away for the low-minded. i say it's just a completely garbled "worship god OR ELSE"

The message of Job - We can only pretend the world is coherent, that things make sense, but we must remember this is ultimately a lie.

That goes against christian doctrine though.

A more likely interpretation given the history of the text is that Job's faith allowed him to question God, but not to deal with his problems. If he merely trusted God to give his crap back then he would have had no problem.

I can see that very clearly. Was it because Job in a way was expecting to have everything because he was a good man? I still don't see how his friends were to be punished, it was almost like god didn't need a reason to take anything away, he's god and that's that

I think it was more that Job expected a good reason behind his suffering when there really wasn't one - to expect a reason from God is arrogance. His friends just had a very simplistic view of what God does - always punishing evil or always rewarding good without exceptions. They don't get the larger moral issue.

That's how I understand it anyways. I think one of the great things about the Bible is that it's been discussed for thousands of years and there are still a great many different interpretations, and one doesn't even need to be Jewish or Christian to develop their own.

This.

Also, remember this was written when Satan was "The Adversary" i.e. a figure who argued the case of man's impiety and tried to break Job to make him curse God.

I'm pretty sure Satan's role is based upon a figure who had a similar role in the Persian Shah's court.
