Given all this Wolfe discussion I'm going to repost my Solar Cycle theory.

Firstly, the secret of the imhumi Jahli told nettle was a blindingly obvious red herring. Secondly, the sea goddess on Blue is another Scylla, revealed in the final pages of Return to the Whorl. Given the time it took her to grow to her current size on Urth, we can presume she has been on Blue for a while.

I propose The Whorl was not the first ship to arrive at the Blue/Green system. Another ship dispatched from Urth carrying the young sea goddess Scylla must have arrived long before The Whorl for her to grow to her current size. This ship arrived shortly before The Neighbours went extinct (they were familiar with sea goddess Scylla). This ship also carried the inhumi (from Urth) which were introduced to wipe out The Neighbours (perhaps in preparation for the colonisation). This would explain how Imhumi were within The Whorl from launch (there wre also passengers). The secret of the inhumi is that they are not native to green, but instead to Urth. The Alzabo is similar to the Inhumi, superficially (imitating human voices and seemingly their souls). Perhaps just as the human Scylla grew to monster-Scylla, so did normal imhunmi grow into the Alzabo?

However, I still don't see how this secret would spell their doom, which was really emphasised.

I'm copying my kinda review of the last book I read for anyone who reads books and doesn't circlejerk on discord like an underage newfag:

>reading this self-published amazon trash but it has some good moments
>generic peasant MC who accidentally magic
>MC is 13
>mentor dude gives no fucks
>2nd or 3rd time they meet (I think when MC is leaving to live with teacher), straight up tells 13yo MC to literally shut the fuck up
>insults MC all the time but likes it when MC insults back
>mentor lives innawoods and the Mysterious Being that protects his house (owns it basically) takes the form of a cat that the mentor (and then the MC) literally calls the goddamn cat
there's a part where the MC rescues his mom and brings her there for safety. The mom is describing it and asking about it. MC goes, "oh that's the goddamn cat!" instrinctively and his mom yells at him for it.
lel
just any time it's brought up it makes me laff
>what's his name?
>grandfather always called him the goddamn cat. said he seems to like it

>grandfather (mentor dude) talks mad shit to this fae lord in the fae realm
>"well I'll kill <MC>!"
>yeah I don't give a fuck, do it and you know I'll still rip you apart piece by piece
>spooks him into not doing shit
BOO BITCH
mentor dude talks mad shit about all the magic users of the current era and how he'll make MC into a giganigga, i love it

Okay, I like interesting ideas being explored. Three-Body Problem really only scratched the surface level when it came to ideas, and sometimes it could be interesting but never really went deep with it. I really love Dark Forest because of how it combines interesting concepts, with interesting character development, because of it you really start giving a shit about the universe. The one thing that was a little disappointing is how easy the Wallbreakers saw through the Wallfacers, and that the "true plans" weren't that interesting or complex, but that was definitely redeemed at the end of the book and I loved it.

I did notice Redemption of Time was written by someone else so I was already planning to go into it with a "fanfiction" mindset.

Wuxia is kung fu fights in a pretty standard world, maybe some magic weapons
Xianxia takes this and adds fantastical worlds, powers and the goal of becoming godlike and often transcending humanity into a realm of the heavens.
Cultivation in these books is basically a power level/magic system, every book has its own but the basis is usually eastern medicine i.e. they have to cleanse their meridians then have a breakthrough via meditation.
Most of the time it's more like anime inspired fantasy fights than the old martial arts focused wuxia novels although some books do stick closer to kungfu.
Also because of the progression system the protagonist is almost inevitably on the path to becoming one of the strongest beings ever so the genre can feel a bit juvenile at times.

Answer me this /sffg/: how come some chinaman wrote the best piece of scifi of the last twenty years?

>> No.15344048

>>15343827
The real problem with Sanderson is that the schlock he writes isn't even that entertaining. He just can't write. The dialogue is atrocious and clunky, full of boring exposition the vast majority of the time, or the laziest jokes even a 15 year old would think beneath him. The prose is so simple and straightforward, you might as well be reading stage directions. Almost zero evocative language language used, aside from old stock phrases and platitudes to set a tone. The action scenes are the worst. It's like someone painstakingly describing the mechanics of movement to a blind person, with no real sense tension or danger. The plots are cookie cutter and formulaic, highly predictable unless all you've ever read are other dull YA adventures. All of his longer stories are way too stretched out, and suffer from poor pacing that grind what little momentum there is into a painful crawl about halfway through.

Please, pick up a random book from the /r/fantasy top chart and notice how all the good guys act on stupid, internally inconsistent contemporary moral frameworks. It's because Amerifats are obsessed with white knighting, democracy, forced equality, and some vague notion of "freedom".
Name one good fantasy dictator from such a list (inherited monarchies don't count if the book employs "the good kingdom" or "the good king" tropes).

There's probably arguments to made that the Chinese economic growth and technological mindset of the last 10-20 years reflects that of the USA (and maybe USSR) when they were writing phenomenal sci-fi in the last century, but who knows. Without getting too into politics you have to admit China is the site of lots of scientific endeavour and social change being driven by science. Maybe that's catalytic to good sci-fi (but then I haven't read any other good Chinese sci-fi).

Remembrance of Earth's Past < Blindopraxia IMO but they're still both incredible. I would pay good money for Cixin and Watts to sit down and create a book together, Jesus Christ (pic related)

The genre-spanning nature of the tales make them difficult to directly contrast. I personally feel The Poet's and Detective's Tales are the weakest (though both still great short stories), although I freely admit The Poet's Tale went slightly over my head.

Green is actually the worst book I've ever finished. You could tell it was bad from the first chapter, and I only made it to the end because it was laughably bad. The fact that someone here recommended it to me is insane. It's actually so fucking bad. It's a YA novel that can't be sold to children. The protagonist is intentionally unlikable, but everyone she interacts with is unintentionally unlikable because the author is (was, God bless) unlikable. The prose is awful and it wraps itself around dialogue that's influenced more by anime and erotica than anything else. It's so fucking bad.

Depending on who you ask Peter here either assaulted a border guard and had to be chocked and maced into submission or the said border guard attacked him after verbally challenging his orders to arrest him.

https://io9.gizmodo.com/sf-author-peter-watts-found-guilty-of-felony-resistanc-5497556

"Toronto author Peter Watts has been found guilty of assaulting, resisting and obstructing a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer. Jurors returned the verdict today in St. Clair County Circuit Judge James Adair's courtroom. He faces up to two years in prison when sentenced April 26. Watts, 52, was crossing the Blue Water Bridge on Dec. 8 when he was stopped for a random inspection after paying his toll on the American side. He refused to comply with orders during the inspection and had a physical altercation with Officer Andrew Beaudry. Beaudry testified earlier this week that Watts tried to choke him. Watts' trial started Tuesday. Jurors deliberated for 5 ½ hours Thursday before reaching a verdict this morning."

Needless to say I respect that self hating Canuck even more now.

So I just got done reading the part in Citadel of the Autarch where Severian is in the lazaret with the dead soldier he brought back. And to say I'm confused would be a severe understatement. What the fuuuck did I just read? He's having a conversation with the soldier. The soldier thinks himself some beautiful chick. Severian is provided a mirror by Foila, which he then uses to have the soldier look at himself. The soldier confirms he sees that chick in the mirror -- that is, he sees himself as her. Severian states he thinks the soldier is two people, and confesses that he is also. Then Severian seems to think he's talking to Jonas after a brief discussion about Father Inire's mirrors. He tells him about Jolenta, and the soldier walks away lickety split with not even a peep. What??? Who was hallucinating? Severian or the dead soldier? Will this make sense as I continue CotA? No other part in this story has blatantly confused me from the beginning such as this.

>> No.15351351

>>15351301
It's not a hallucination.
The mirror may not be the mirrors we know. Since Severian asks to use it, and it then shows the girl's face, it's probably some mind reading technology.
The soldier part is super confusing. If you haven't figured out his real identity, keep reading or you'll get spoiled.

>> No.15351395

Fuck man I already got spoiled on Dorcasand I'm kinda pissed about that. I'm assuming this soldier is Jonas since that's what he calls him.
How the fuck did you figure about the mind reading tech, anyway? Or is that explained later? I mention this because I thought only the soldier could see it, not Severian too. Then again, there are those times where others saw Severian as Thecla, or at least thought they did . Also, I'm still confused as to who was actually talking on the journey to the lazaret. Was Severian talking and the soldier out of it? Or vice-versa? I really hope all this clears up at least somewhat.

By "I thought only the soldier could see it", I mean the girl's face.
Actually, Severian was confirming with the mirror, whether the girl being described was Jolenta, wasn't he? So then Jonas was the soldier. But what are the odds he'd run into him out in the woods, "dead" as fuck against a tree. What the fuck? And the "two people" thing Severian tries to describe to him is still somewhat confusing to me. But I think I'll start to make sense of it soon.

Because the guy says he sees a woman and that's not how mirrors work, which is the most suspicious thing (unless he was a tranny and it was a metaphorical resemblance, like a magic mirror that shows the best version of you, which is not the case).
Severian may or may not be able to see the image on the mirror. We don't know exactly how the thing works, but it doesn't matter. What Sev does remember is how Jolenta looked, so he can project her likeness on the mirror.
Whenever some object works in a strange way, like the hut in the Botanical Gardens, it's usually some weird tech, so you have to infer what they actually are from what they do. Nobody knows much about technology, and Severian is particularly obtuse in that regard.

Severian always looks like Severian, but I guess some people may take a shift in his pose, tone or whatever and mistake him for T. At least that's my explanation.

About the other post, it's the most confusing aspect and there are a few theories, but it would be best to finish Citadel and Urth to form your own explanation.

Those Gaylo books were horrible. Both writing and the themes of the books.
Here are a few recommendations:

Frontlines series by Marko Kloos
The one thing that makes this awfully generic series stand out is the quality of writing. Here you have all the usual tropes - future Cold War (along the pretty much same lines), Air Combat Controller in SPACEEEEE, general dystopia, inexplicably hostile aliens, the works.
But it is a well written and fun read.

The Subterrene War series by T.C. McCarthy
Really bleak, hard and near future mil sci-fi, written by a former intelligence analyst. Hard characters, hard science (focused on military affairs) and avoidance of usual tropes.
The first book reads like Dispatches by Michael Herr in a future conflict.

Future Weapons of War a collection of short stories edited by Joe Haldeman
Dozen or so authors with their take on future military conflicts. You'll probably find something you like there.

I don't know about others here but it really didn't grab my attention. Kind of dropped it after the bad guys unleashed the alien goo on that station. Don't get me wrong, me dropping it has nothing to do with the quality of the novels (which are great) but more with he fact that i have already read about all of that. The Belters, the various polities in the Solar system, the usual Earth vs. Mars, etc. - all of that has already been written about in various other works.

For what it's worth, the story drastically shifts in the back half. What starts as Earth v Mars turns into Earth being destroyed, Mars being abandoned, humanity spreading across 1300 systems, a galactic human Empire lead by a tyrant because the 4th dimensional gods that wiped out the builders of the protomolecule ("alien goo") are halting the technological advancements of humanity and the only way to survive is to be a united human front and storm the 4th dimension and kill the 'gods'.

It goes off the rails in a spectacular fashion

Having seen it all before it did not grab my attention as much. Now even less because the direction taken sounds retarded.

>>15352769
We can discuss the Expanse, at least up until the point I stopped following it.
Let's take acceleration couches, which have been described as far back as the golden age of SF. Joe Haldeman in Forever War actually has a far more effective set up, using liquid submersion. Due to liquids being non-compressible, the crews can take far higher double digit acceleration.

Which is literally a plot point in book 8 when they finally have technology that's reached the point where they can fully submerse themselves in crash gel while fluids fill their lungs.

You're basically refusing to read it because you think you've read it already because it's similar to other SF stories written half a centuary ago.
At that point, what do you even read? Everythings been done and done to death already. Nothing is new or exciting because you can always go back and find the origin story of it and just read that.
Every time I try to engage with people on /lit/ it just reminds me more and more how utterly pretentious the lot of you are.

I am not refusing to read the Expanse. I have already read the first few books. And decided it's not for me. Which does not mean that somehow the Expanse is not for you too. Read it, enjoy it - and for a good reason. As I said it's a good series. Far, far better than most of the shit that gets peddled as sci-fi nowadays.
I know this place is full of hysterically insecure posters who try to overcompensate with, as you said, being pretentious pricks but that's not me.
I am always up to anything that is above Sanderson a hack level of discussion.

I meant tranny by him feeling like a woman in the body of a man.

I read that part again (it's chapter 6 of CotA) and it looks like I was wrong. It's probably just a mirror.
This summary (>>15351301) has it wrong in a few ways. Miles says he recalls walking/flying by Severian and seeing his OWN FACE multiplied a hundred ways, AND also the face of the most beautiful woman in the world. Severian passes him the mirror (he doesn't look at it so there's no mental image projection tech involved) and asks Miles if the face he saw was the one in the mirror. Miles says yes. Severian asks "Blue eyes?". Miles says yes. I don't recall Jolenta's eye color, but the one who does have blue eyes is Miles, meaning Severian was not asking about the woman he saw, but rather about the multiplied faces Miles had seen while walking with him after he's revived.

Sff was the construct of choice for Asimov, whose fame as one smart cookie is indisputable.

Note that I mentioned reading more fiction other than sff. If it were up to me, every sff reader would have also read at least Tolstoy, Joyce, and Gaddis, but that's not going to happen without significant effort.

Seethe harder.

A sffg discord is going to continue to be a trend, and I'm going to promote the new one, since its members have better taste for looking down on Sanderson.

What is this 310 bullshit?
I'm not threadwarring anything. I'm sick and fucking tired of coming into these threads only to read dribble posted by drooling underage newfag abortion rejects.
The thread is meant to discuss SCIENCE FICTION and FANTASY LITERATURE--obviously this can (rarely) extend to tangentially related material such as manga, movies, comics, etc.
If you want to discuss anything else, >>>/soc/ literally exists for that purpose.

>>15355498
This too. It's all kids responding to kids and needing to get the last word in.
>hurr DURR I've been here so long!
>does nothing but spew newfagisms ad nauseum and act like a child
It's so grating. All the fucking time. No better than a common woman. Why do these crossboarders come in here?

Nah.
You just need to go back.

remember when we had little specific questions in the op and they'd lead to a couple of discussion trigger answers per thread?

I miss that

Putting that shitty discord link is certainly stimulating discussion. Let's hope OP lasts as long as the previous thread slave.

I've always wondered whatever it is that this album cover portrays. I used to think it was a vast ocean with large storm clouds in the back, but i've noticed a line of people in the back that seem to be marching to somewhere, and on this particular high definition the water looks more like sand. what the hell is going on there? Is it a procession of an ancient druidic cult, marching past the Rhine and into their doom, to be sacrificed to some ancient God?
