There's several different denominations of Islam. Religion is syncretic, amorphous, and practiced differently from individual to individual. People mainly follow a religion because the people around them do, and not because they've put much thought into the doctrines of the most strict interpretation. Most people are deeply afraid of death, but not philosophically-inclined enough to come up with their own answers. To make an analogy, most people just install Windows with bloatware instead of coding their own OS from scratch.

Depends on the country you're in. The more extreme interpretations of Sunni Islam is the result of the house of Saud allying itself with the British Imperial crown, and later, the United States. It's useful to prop up the right wing extremists of another people. It makes them look brutal from the outside. Islam in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iran is a far cry from Islam in, say, the USA, or Mongolia. Lax interpretations thrive where extremists do not hold sway. Extremists thrive where imperialist money props up dictators. It's quite simple. As I said, religion is syncretic, and how extreme the adherents are is largely a byproduct of the political and material conditions. The Middle East is miserable due to endless wars. Children orphaned by bombs grow up in the shelter of nationalists. The most extreme Muslims aren't really that much different than your Klanners and Channers, once you take religion and race out of the equation.

Awful take. Define extremism. The reason for Islam’s ‘extremism’ is that anything coming out of a liberal scholars mouth will always be spiritually banal compared to anything sayyid qutb has to say. You could argue that the material conditions determine the superstructure or whatever, but there’s no interesting/popular reformers in islam right now (as far as I know). And if there was, it would be something so far removed from the mainstream schools it would be something else entirely and start a Middle Eastern version of the reformation wars in Europe.

as for multiculturalism, the problem as I see it is not cultural exchange and trade, which has been occurring throughout human history; hermit kingdoms become impoverished, and the flow of product, tech and ideas enrich us all. but anything can be taken too far, and when different cultures are thoroughly blended, the result is a mishmash of the lowest common denominator, and ultimately homogeny. ideally there should be distinct nations and cultures all interacting with one another, but that's usually not what is meant by words like multiculturalism and diversity.
