I've never liked these "epic" SF novels - they're like soap operas to me.. - , I'd probably chose "The Sirens of Titan" or one Kir Bulychov book "Naked People" - this one is anti-authoritarian in a spirit of "1984" - but completely unique and original.

For starters Dune is Space Fantasy and not actual sci-fi.

I'd honestly take anything that isn't those shallow "muh sci fantasy space opera" anyday. Asimov is the only one who can make good space opera and Dick and Clarke have made some of the best philosopical readings sci fi has ever offered

Dune is soft science fiction since it doesn't really too heavily on gadgets and technology, in the books, at least before Heretics of Dune, the Butlerian Jihad had nearly destroyed most technology and there were prohibitions against making advanced tech that could imitate human minds. There is still gadgets and tech(maula pistols, lasguns, still suits, etc.) but the emphasis in Dune is placed on the characters.
