15321929 No.15321929 [Reply] [Original]

I just had this epiphany. We really are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. As the only intelligent life in the universe we've accomplished so much yet none of it matters. Every piece of literature written in glory and triumph was done so in vain. If we went extinct tomorrow all of it would evaporate

That's not true anon, everything we do matters, every small action, every decision, none of it was in vain, its the way it is. Not even the smallest ant is insignificant, certainly not the average human - even if they aren't aware of it - there's nothing else they could possibly be. To say we are insignificant is a cop out.

That's literally a nickle for every single time I hear that about human accomplishments.

I don't know about EVERYTHING. I think aliens would be interested in the Bible, The Qur'an, and Hamlet of all things.

I've been thinking of OP's post for the last 10 minutes and I want to derail a bit while hoping it puts things into perspective.

What are ant hills? What are bees nests? Are the colonies organisms themselves? The workers don't reproduce, yet they understand their purpose in the "grand scheme" of the colony, and they do their duty. I've heard them described as super-organisms. A collection of organisms each with their own genetic code, but serving a specialized function that serves only a high caste of reproductive organisms, they themselves having nothing to do with reproduction.

Humans see themselves as individuals, and organisms. But are we not also super-organisms? Our physiology is largely carried out by specialized cells (microscopic organisms) that have no direct role in reproduction. Our physiology is also regulated by other types of micro-organisms. Are we not then a colony of organisms?

What is an individual then? You might say it's an organism with consciousness and awareness that it is a part of a whole. Might it be possible that we are not only individuals, but also organisms as a part of a larger colony than the ant colony or the human colony? I think that it's true. I wonder if this colony/super-organism that we humans are a part of is conscious of itself on a level that we can't comprehend.

It’s like this, there is no point in trying to understand. Time is unimportant. We are dust from the stars. We are nothing at all. Whether you die at age 15 or 79, in a thousand years there is no significance to it. So fuck off with your worries.

>In endless space countless luminous spheres, round each of which some dozen smaller illuminated ones revolve, hot at the core and covered over with a hard cold crust; on this crust a mouldy film has produced living and knowing beings: this is empirical truth, the real, the world. Yet for a being who thinks, it is a precarious position to stand on one of those numberless spheres freely floating in boundless space, without knowing whence or whither, and to be only one of innumerable similar beings that throng, press, and toil, restlessly and rapidly arising and passing away in beginningless and endless time.

Unironically just try to enjoy your time here. So what if we are meaninglessly insignificant in the grand scheme of things? That doesn't mean what we do isn't meaningless. Meaning is a human fabrication and we exist on the universe's terms, so you might as well reconcile this while you're ahead.

What is that imagine you post so much? And "WE" don't decide what matters, there is no "WE". There is no I, there is no you. These are egotistical ideas. When we find ourselves and find out what we really are, the concept of "matters" is one that escapes us. After all, as long as it is an idea in our head we don't have the "real thing".
