Doing much better in quarantine than I was before all this. Getting tons of reading done, watching lots of movies, and I'm not merely freed from social interaction, I'm actively encouraged to avoid it. Dream come true. Does /lit/ have any advice for a 20 year old NEET? I originally went to university to study CS but I failed out because I didn't do a single assignment. I absolutely loathed all my classes and felt like throwing up every time I tried to start coding or doing any STEM subject. I'm trying mural painting. Want to do my graduating theses revolve around society and identity. What I'm planning is to try to get communities to embellish their neighborhoods, giving them tools and knowledge and guidance, but trying to paint their ideas as best as possible. Teach them how to appropiate of spaces, so hopefully our city becomes a bit more beautiful, to feel that it's ours.

Pic is my first mural, from a couple weeks ago.

Don't and can't think about my economic future though.

I was actually going to asphyxiate myself with argon this week but decided to rally one last time to get to get this schoolwork done and generally regain control of my life after there was a death in the family. I felt like the timing would be really inconsiderate if I killed myself so soon after my relatives lost someone else. Of course, professors are too busy to give a shit about what one of their retarded students is up to: While I managed to catch up in all the remaining assignments and pass all my final exams, I didn't turn in enough homework to actually pass any of the courses I had.

Philosophy classes are harder than they look, at least once you hit a certain level (200+). A lot of guys in other majors come in hoping for an easy course to blow off, but get surprised by the workload and the amount of dense reading which they don't understand (because they don't put in the time, especially for contextual and historical vocabulary). Everyone's a philosopher, so they think, which to them means stating their banal opinion in class, but don't understand why they're failing. So it's harder to bullshit your way through a paper. It's not intrinsically hard, but it is when you blow off the reading and try to skim through it, which might happen if it's on the sidelines.

this is bullshit. the weakness of the polygraph is that there is still a fallible human being on the other end who has to make an interpretation. the idea is not to give no reaction at all (this will likely cause the proctor to become MORE suspicious) but to find a way to react inconsistently to truth and falsehood. the absolute best way to arouse suspicion is to have no reactions at all, since they will be attempting to actively determine your biological responses to telling the truth and a lie with obvious questions before diving into the meat of it.

Based anon. I suggest applying for SSI and food stamps for now to hold you over and then take the GED. Once you're 26, financial qualification status changes at universities and you might be able to get in. Make sure you max out your loans once in and then once you make it to grad school, you'll be set and be able to extract 22k for living expenses from your loans. Debt really doesn't matter if you don't need to pay it back. Quickest way to KYS in your situation is to listen to the Dave Ramseys of the world.

I like all the character focused scenes: Hektor talking to his wife, the conflict between Achilles and Agamemnon, Nestor trying to properly guide the Greeks. All of that stuff is gold. What I am not enjoying is the drawn out battle sequences. Page after page of:

"GREEK SOLDER #13434, SON OF SOME GREEK FARMER WHO HAD A FARM BY A RIVER, PLUNGED HIS SPEAR INTO TROJAN CAPTAIN #654363, WHO WAS A WELL RENOWNED CLAY POTTER."

There's just to many long descriptions of very minor characters who exist just to get murdered. I'd prefer if the focus was on the main characters. That being said, I do like how violent and gory the battles are. Homer literally describes peoples brains oozing out of their skulls as well as their bloody teeth falling out of their head after getting stabbed in the jaw. His descriptions really do paint a vivid image. Overall I'm enjoying it.

I haven't done well in my essays, basically. I've passed them but the funding bodies in the UK demand a higher grade, typically. I put this down to my complacence, anxiety and the alien nature of the course really. So, whereas my undergrad was concerned with questions emerging from 20th century phenomenological and existentialist tradition and religious philosophy, my postgrad is exclusively focused on the philosophy of mind and analytic tradition. The methodologies required to answer questions are therefore different.
Either way, if I want to get a PhD now, I'll have to either become a researcher and get a few years of experience, or take a research degree. Not fun either way since it's more work just to get where I want to be.

This may seem odd but I'm not going to complete a second bachelors. Let me explain since this may seem odd depending on where you're from. But here in the U.S you don't necessarily have to have a bachelors in philosophy before moving on to a masters. You just have to show promise plus the three letters of recommendation as usual. To do this though you have to really knock it out of the park and have good relations with your professors, they'll be writing your letters after all. Plus it's not really strange to go on to the masters rather than straight to Phd so you can get more experienced in the subject.

It's been fine so far. Just have to study for the GRE and and get everything else I need together. But I haven't ran into any issues as of yet.

Some tips
If you look around online you can find the best universities that are more focused on what you're interested in. On forums people make recs to point you in the right direction.
Look up faculties at universities to make sure there are people there that have the same interests as you.
Have the rankings in mind but don't completely lean on them. Universities that focus on continental philosophy can have placement rates as good as the best universities, just look up data and do lots of research to get a list of possible places together. Unfortunately the ones responsible for the most well known rankings have a bias that leave out universities where employment prospects are as good as the best places because they have preconceptions of what the subject is supposed to be like, ignoring all the forms of it in its history. But what's funny is I'm sure their absence from ranking means less applications, meaning higher odds of acceptance.
You don't want to study somewhere for a masters that never got anyone to a university in the last 10 years for their PhD, nor do you want to do a PhD at a place where the tenure prospects don't look good.

As of right now that's what I've gathered so far. Just try your best if it's really what you want to do. Make sure to participate in class to make good impressions on your professors (don't make cringe remarks but if you say something sort of interesting it might impressive, don't ever try to up the professor but they'll be more impressed by a good question), show that you have serious intentions (just seeing them in office hours is a good way to do that), study your hardest of course and hone your writing ability. Look up the guides online to writing a philosophy paper. Have the basics down of the structure of a philosophy paper plus show that you've thought deeply about your topic and the As come pretty easy. Good luck anon!

On your second post, yeah they have been undergrad courses. Whether it's a good move or not is up to you to decide. How strongly do you feel about the subject? If it's strong enough to where you know the odds aren't 100% in your favor but you want to push ahead then do it. There's no guarantee on this road, but as cliche as it sounds most great accomplishments don't come without risk. I just don't want to be old and gray one day and reflecting on a subject I've felt strongly about and never having made the attempt to study it. You choose what matters more, immediate $ or doing something you like for a living. Making money for someone all my life and being stuck in a cubicle is not where I want to be. So either I'll make it or be grateful for the journey knowing I tried.

How are they doing home GRE testing?

That's gotta be better than the in-office test I had to do. FUCK the GRE. I didn't even know it existed (I'm not American but was applying to US universities) and had like two weeks to re-learn years of math.

Tips for the writing section of the GRE, for anyone ITT taking it: practice writing the stupid essays (they are all posted online) in the EXACT manner you will be taking the test. That is, don't look at the essay prompt you will be using for your practice run until you sit down and you're already on the clock, because that's what it will be like in there. Really let yourself feel how stupid those prompts are, what it feels like to get a shitty one, what it feels like to have 30 minutes with the clock ticking, etc. If you do what most people do and look over a few of the practice essay topics, walk around casually thinking about them and what you'd write and so on, you will bias your brain into thinking this is how it will be on the test day. It's not. That 30 minutes goes by quick.

You can practice math and vocab and all that shit in a general way, but the writing section is one of the few parts of the GRE where the arbitrary structure of the test is what will fuck you. You need to train your muscle memory to write those things in the format you'll actually be given. For example it surprised me that they gave us a pencil and shitty red paper to write an outline on. I needed to write my outline via text and shift it around, but the software didn't allow that. So I had to just abandon outlines and write. That cost me a minute or two of thinking about it. Etc.

>>15292592
It's fake shit. There are so many things like this in the States it's mind-boggling, so many needless extra steps imposed by factitious private companies and even whole industries sometimes. "Standardized testing" was someone's idea of meritocracy a century ago and all it does is enforce the opposite.

The GRE costs $200 to take. Then guess what? It costs another $10-20 (I forget) for each time you want to "send" your "results" to the grad schools you're applying to, even though the results are a number stored on a computer and I can see them any time I want (cf. my screenshot above). But the schools are in cahoots with the testing institutes, so they won't accept hand-submitted results. You have to pay for each one you "send."

Then each application to grad school costs $100-150 on average. So just to apply for grad schools, for one year, you're out nearly a thousand bucks by the end of it all. Very meritocratic.

Look who owns this shit:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Educational_Testing_Service

They also own TOEFL (the English as a second language standard) and "run but don't own" the SATs. It's one big scam. So are most MA programs now. It's a common, open joke at the biggest-name American universities that the MA programs are just cash cows. You apply for a PhD, their meaningless lottery admissions process doesn't let you in, so they "let" you pay them $50-100k/yr for an MA. At first, the world outside academia thinks these MAs are worth something, because having an MA from Harvard still sounds impressive. But now that it's been 5-10 years of them all doing these cash cow MA programs, people are starting to wise up to the fact that it's a fake degree, a vanity degree for rich people.

Also, undergraduates have gotten ten times worse since I've been here. American academia as a whole is a corrupt business, a mafia whose public front is a finishing school for rich children.

The academic institutions of America are somewhat corrupt, but not entirely. Their objective is to increase the learning capacity and knowledge of the people going to their institutions.

There is A LOT wrong with academia, actually more in the science and mathematics departments then you even realize, and those mistakes are the most heinous. But even in the humanities departments in some of these so-called 'learning' institutions, they are filled with social Marxist and social Darwinist propaganda. :3

I oscillate between literature and programming. I’m currently feeling motivated to program, though, which is good for my studies. Corona is a godsend for my autism and social anxiety, and I’m sure it’s prevented me from having several mental breakdowns. Life is comfy. Contemplated becoming an occultist, decided not to. I’m probably going to focus on programming because I genuinely enjoy it; I’ll continue to read literature as a hobby. Hell, I might even start watching anime again. I hope we all make it.

>Stuff like Law school or MBAs are typically paid in full by the student.
what about an MS in a stem field?

>> No.15294677

>>15294643
No, for PhDs usually they’re funded so you don’t really pay tuition and you typically get a stipend for your work, but there ends up being other expenses like just general living expenses, conference travel, etc. It depends on where you are, the funding, etc. there’s a lot of factors but most PhD grads do rack up some debt from their PhD. I personally think the stipend is livable usually but people seem to struggle anyway. I guess it depends where you are and how much of a minimalist you are.

> what about an MS in a stem field?
It depends. Some programs are funded. Some aren’t. I think Master’s aren’t typically funded as much as PhDs are but STEM are usually funded more than other fields. This is just my admittedly limited observation.

Ever seen Ratatouille? Anyone can code. My freshman year, I cheated my way through intro coding (CSE131) because I had no idea what was going on while other kids breezed through. Many of your peers will have a huge advantage at first because they have been coding since middle school. But once you get over the learning curve, coding can provide an outlet for creativity through designing solutions to interesting logic problems. It's a grind, but completing an assigned project has an uncanny satisfaction that's only comparable to higher level mathematics, but way more interactive.

In short, no you don't need a background, but don't underestimate the learning curve.

I'm getting a lot of pressure from my family to be a civil servant because I'm both the only son and because my sister hasn't gotten through yet. A year and half back I would've been adamant against it but circumstances are pushing me towards it. I wish I wasn't so vague with what I want.

Uhh who pushes their only son to be a civil servant? That's like third son tier.

>> No.15296366

>>15296249
My parents were civil servants, I'm the third and youngest child. My eldest sister was almost like a son to my parents. It's mostly because of 'job security' that it's getting pushed.

there is also GMAT whcich we use in Europe and I guess you use in US too. It's fucking 250USD to sit the exam, and the same payment scheme for sending the results. It works well as a standarized test though.

Eh, I'm not the most productive when I'm confined at home (need a coffee shop for work). Was planning on dropping school to do a coding boot camp but need to wait on economy to start balancing before I do that. It's weird when you reach the position you want and then realize you want something else.

If you have the application material, just shoot for the PhD. Most programs let you bail with an MA a third of the way through, but you get funding to get it.

Argon is a commonly used gas in welding. As such, you can more readily attain tanks of 99.9% argon for cheaper than you would helium of the same purity (a lot of helium manufacturers cut it anyway because helium's rare and exit bags are a liability for them).
