Life is a simple enough process and doesn't require consciousness to prosper. Consciousness is useless. Though ultimately it leads to more vibrant competition and thus makes the species stronger, even THE strongest; from the standpoint of the individual it leads him to pain and hell on Earth.

Having a self-preservation instinct while also realizing that death is inevitable and to some extent unpredictable causes the human to be the most miserable species on Earth, despite also being the most successful.

I'd say that in this sense we're - quite literally - "doomed to succeed."
