probably trying to reconcile femininity with desire to be treated like a person—knowing that you’ll never know if the men around you actually care about anything you have to say or if they’re just tolerating you because you are nice to look like seems like it would be pure agony. or maybe the way women are absent competition for a male vs. in some context where there is male attention to be won? i think it is more likely the first, though. wanting to be soft, delicate, pretty, tender, gentle whatever, while maintaining a rich inner life/cultivating hobbies/pursuing knowledge/participating in more traditionally male spheres/asserting one’s agency. i think that you almost have to become sexless to be free if you are a woman.
