are you kidding? he was acknowledged by fellow writers and critics as being more developed as a writer than heinlein and asimov, and yet his fame is lesser than either. if anything hes vastly underrated.

What is it about Chesterton and his ability to inspire and fire up total geniuses?

>Wolfe
>Lafferty
>Borges

All of them loved Chesterton.

>> No.15260189

Just pick up any short story. I think Sodom and Gomorrah, Texas is good because you can get it free and it’s short enough to give you a taste of his style. Snuffles, Nine-Hundred Grandmothers, and Selenium Ghosts of the 1870’s are good starting points. His style insanely unique, like Chesterton writing Looney Toons edited by Flannery O’Connor but even that doesn’t convey his style.

>>15260100
He wrote truly unique stories in a distinct style. He effortlessly fused humor, wit, and absurdity with weight, severity, and seriousness. Chesterton is another one of the great forgotten writers of the early 20th century. He’s praised a lot by other writers, but he’s almost entirely ignored by critical and commercial audiences outside of some catholic circles

Wolfe's death really hit me in a way that no other "celebrity" death had, not even the Gass-chamber. I've been reading the Castle of the Otter, which I highly recommend to any serious fans of BotNS. Also, many of the stories in the latter half of BotNS have striking similarities to those in Herodotus—they are both moralistic but not in a cheap sense. Reading ancient literature (and Proust, Borges, etc.) has made me feel closer to Wolfe. Does anyone have any recommendations on Wolfe's influences? Haven't been able to get into Vance yet, idk why.
