Read short stories. I'd recommend Hemingway, Kafka, Mansfield and Chekhov.

Maybe try something like this. They're all pretty short and simple, but you should still find some substance to chew over.

Yeah, I'm gonna disagree with that dude. You'll build up your memory skills much more over time if you focus on making those connections in your head. Maybe consider taking those sorts of notes if you've moved on to thick 19th century novels and you're having trouble with all the names. But I still think it's better to let all that material settle into your head organically.

>I need something short
So why not read short stories? Here's a dozen by a dozen authors. All super-readable, in my opinion. If you like one, read other stuff by that guy.

>The Hitch-Hiker - Roald Dahl
Dahl in 'Tales of the Unexpected' mode. Comfiness personified. (Doubly so if you like driving fast.)

>The Tower of the Elephant - Robert E. Howard
A barbarian climbs a tower to kill the man inside, but things take an unexpected turn. And by the way, Conan isn't a muscle-bound thug.

>Land of the Great Horses - R.A.Lafferty
Cute idea, well executed.

>Dancing Dan's Christmas - Damon Runyon
Who needs the past tense? Or the future tense? And those last two lines are hard to beat.

>For Esme With Love And Squalor - J.D.Salinger
Salinger didn't publish many short stories. But Mozart didn't publish many clarinet concertos either.

>Cathedral - Raymond Carver
A million people like this but that's OK. A million people are right, too.

>The Speckled Band - Arthur Conan Doyle
This was Conan Doyle's favourite Sherlock Holmes story.

>A Dollar And 20 Cents - Charles Bukoswki
"The Snows Of Kilimanjaro", Bukowski-style.

>Rikki-Tikki-Tavi - Rudyard Kipling
'Good children's stories don't pretend there are no monsters. Children know very well there are monsters. Good children's stories show that monsters can be killed.' (G.K.Chesterton)

>To Build A Fire - Jack London
Yes, they made you read it in school. I don't care. It's still great.

>The Battler - Ernest Hemingway
Great sense of place, character, atmosphere.

>The Sea Devil - Arthur Gordon
A man likes to go out in his boat and catch fish by moonlight. One night he sees what he thinks are two mullet about eight feet apart, and angles the throw of his net to collect them both. Only at the last moment does he realize —

Hi OP!!!
Start listening to some short story podcasts too and read along with them, this will help your mental inflection while reading and reading speed to a natural pace

I recommend LeVar Burton reads and Classic Ghost Stories
Just google the story name and sometimes you’ll find it but if you can’t just try your best to pay attention

Books are like any other form of entertainment. There are many, many genres and styles. You can get recommended 1000 books that don't fit the genre that you like, or find them generic and tropeish.

Find a genre you like and stick to it.

>I have short attention span I need something short because I tend to not finish reading long books

No you don't. Your problem is that you read books that are uninteresting for you. Imagine watching a series that doesn't hook you. It becomes a chore. Instead of searching books by lenght, look for books that fit your preferences, and then read just as much as you feel like. Feel free to skip whole chapters if you don't like them. Reading foiction is just another form of entertainment, not a chore.

Said that, I'd recommend "The perfume" by Patrick Süskind, a book I never see recommended anywhere but I absolutely loved.

"Treasure Island is short," and it has pirates, surely that will hold your attention! "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" is also rather short. You could also leaf through "The Mysterious Stranger and Other Stories" by Mark Twain which as you can guess are a short compendium of tales. "The Old Man and the Sea" is also extremely short, though it's a polarizing book, you may think it's amazing, or you'll hate it, there's a fine line.
