Why are contemporary book covers so boring? I'm sick of the minimalist text on solid colour background aesthetic. Also post your favourite book covers.

When we read Macbeth in highschool we used this version. The layout isn't very pretty, it's meant for high school students, but i've always loved the photo on the cover. It really fits the play, i guess that's why there's tons of Macbeth editions with a chess metaphor on the cover.

Why do I get the feeling I can summarise all of these books without actually having read them? Or at least get the general feel of what they are going to be about.
For example:
>Normal People
Probably about a single woman who is "quirky" in some form or other, and the title is referring both to her attempt to reconcile her outward normality and the normality of her attempts at relationships with her supposed rich inner life(which is also totally normal by nearly any standard, but just abnormal enough not to discomfit the middle aged women who read this book and others like it.)

It is about a girl who is "quirky" (it's the cliché "really smart girl who is also a 10/10 when she finally gets convinced to put on make up and dress up"). The book is mostly erotica though, in a weird way since the main girl is also wilfully self-destructive (had to read this for a book club and not a single woman there thought she did anything wrong, despite constantly allowing herself be exploited).

Book covers today are designed for e-readers and Amazon thumbnails, that's why they're just boring titles and author names.

I like this one because she looks like an actual child instead of the harlot that most of the other covers have her as. And I just like the colors and the aesthetic.

Hardly. It's very challenging but not particularly rewarding. Plus, it being challenging stems solely from the fact that the narrative is confined to the (always unattributed) dialogue spoken in one building, thus omitting almost all major plot points, which can only be reconstructed through vague references to them in the dialogue. The story itself is pretty good, with a great ending and many interesting characters, but unduly simple considering the effort you have to put into understanding it. It's still a Gaddis of course, which means that the dialogue is extremely good. I would only recommend reading it if you're a fan and have already read his three major novels.

Oh, and one of the characters is an annoying mouthpiece for Gaddis and spends pages rambling about Christians and conservatives.
