Read Harold Bloom's notes to Shakespeare. They're full of shit and, by some reason, everyone believes that those superficial analysis explain very well the greatness of Shakespeare.

What makes Shakespeare great is his thematic approach to life. For example, Romeo & Juliet isn't the cliché story about the two lovers who cannot live their love... is the story of how a depressed boy and an hysteric girl say how all the things they do are because of love, but in reality they do those things because of a tantrum that lead 'em to death.
