What did you spend your free time reading today bros? I started reading The Alexiad, very interesting.

I read N*usea by S*rtre. its fucking awful but I started it and I won't put it down until I finish it, this is the last time I'll get meme'd into reading fiction.

So what is that book about? I know I could just Google it, but a /lit/izen will tell it in a more interesting fashion.
Today I finished Molière's School for Wives as well as Critique of the School for Wives, and read around 100 pages of Wellek and Warren's Theory of Literature, a pretty smooth read.

i masturbated twice which drained me of any energy and I'm still left over with residual horniness. sexual activity leads to more sexual activity. i can't do anything with my life whenever im regularly doing this.

It's a biography of Byzantine Emperor Alexios I written by his daughter Anna translated to English. It basically serves as a first hand account of what was going on in the Byzantine Empire from 1081-1118 (including the First Crusade). Very interesting read.

Thanks! It actually sounds boring as fuck but I have a good friend who is obsessed with Byzantium, he will definitely find it worthwhile.

are you into the byzantine era? i have almost no knowledge about it but i deem it to be an essential subject accounting for my interest in pre-modern southern europe/near east and above all eastern christianity. what would you recommend, i think the alexiad would be an interesting read after being more immersed in byzantine epoch

I would heavily recommend The Alexiad since it is a first-hand account of how imperial life was in the Byzantine Empire at the time. As for other readings I would recommend, try these:

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon (for the Byzantine parts)

The Chronographia of Michael Psellus (another first hand account of the Byzantine Empire, this one accounts the rule of 14 different Emperors)

Lost to the West by Lars Brownworth (a more "pop-history" look into the Byzantine Empire)

The Secret History by Procopius (a more truthful first hand account of what Justinian and his court were actually like, as written by his chronicler)

Streams of Gold, Rivers of Blood by Anthony Kaldellis (paints a picture of a more gradual decline of the Empire rather than a sudden fall)

And of course any books about 1453/The Fall of Constantinople are pretty good too (there are loads of them)

Finished Anna Karenina and Beyond Good & Evil today; might start The Ambassadors if I don't feel too tired. Wasn't expecting to finish either until Friday so this is a pleasant surprise

If it wasn't a truthful accounting then what is it? Insurance for plausible deniability in case of Justinian's overthrowing?

The Professor by Charlotte Bronte. It's really boring, a guy becomes a clerk, then he becomes a teacher. There's no hook, no drama, no introspection, just descriptions of this guy working.

Just started The Name of the Wind. I'm really digging the descriptive narration of the authors choice of words.
