I'm sick of MM being his most prolifically known work.

I'm assuming they'll say Joseph and His Brothers

It is his most accessible work though. Of course it's the most popular. (It's also my favorite)

I'm glad I don't go completely unnoticed

All I can say is that JAHB and Buddenbrooks are my #1 and 2, but that may have been according to me going into them completely unassuming, whereas MM is so talked about that it just left me underwhelmed, and is kind of tied-for-third with Doctor Faustus (I need to read them again to have a more finalized opinion I think). I just feel that, on reading them back-to-back, JAHB tackled most (if not all) of the themes of MM in a better fashion, but that could even be a purely aesthetic affair for me.

I thought Magic Mountain was a beautiful musing of time and human understanding. It gets a lot of flak for the 1 dimensional supporting characters being walking philosophical stand ins but they all serve Hans to an ends, and are also typical of the type of novel this is. The later chapters have some of the most poetic passages I've ever read, particularly, Snow, A Good Solider, and A Stroll by the Shore. I've not read a book that so accurately describes the passage of time - how the boredom and monotony stretch the day, the hour into infinity, and at the same time turn the year without our noticing at all.

Anyway, what do you recommend I read next? I've only read Death in Venice and Magic Mountain.
