>only browse Wikipedia/SEP/IEP for philosophy
>takes 10x less time than reading the primary texts
>absorb the exact same information as the people who read the primary texts, and come to a better understanding than if I had read the primary texts
>am able to have in depth discussion on /lit/ where I usually come out the victor
So what’s the point in actually reading philosophy? Many of you will spend decades learning new languages and devoting yourself to the study of philosophy and yet you come out no wiser than me in the end. No other discipline does this. Nobody reads Euclid or Pythagoras or Newton to come to an understanding of their ideas, they look to a textbook instead. Why are philosophers then so adamant about reading the primary texts?

If these things could have been so simply omitted without losing on substance, do you not think that the philosophers themselves would have written much shorter books?

No, you retard. It’s much harder to explain an idea you personally came up with rather than an idea you read with the advantage of hindsight. That’s why philosophers are so redundant and repetitive in their writing: they’re still developing their thought as they write, whereas a person explaining their ideas in an encyclopaedia has the advantage of hindsight.
Moreover, Plato only had the presocratics to look back on. An encyclopaedia explaining Plato has the whole of subsequent philosophy to help interpret him and explain his ideas more succinctly than he even could.

no. refrain from posting until you've familiarized yourself with the subject matter.

Do you really think discussion on /lit/ is in depth or that the goal of a philosophical discussion is to be victorious? If yes, you didnt understand shit.

I mean this in the sincerest way possible: your post is terribly ignorant, your world is small, your stakes are low, and you have contributed nothing to the soul of humanity by verbalizing these meager thoughts. Find a rope and a rafter as soon as possible.
