"War and Peace" by Lev Tolstoi.

Incidentally: one of the most elated dreams that I have ever had involved witnessing a troop of what I understood to be imperial Russian soldiers of the Napoleonic era, descending down a winding stairase, prepared for combat; they evoked a feeling of lucid(ly vibrating) exaltation, and their presence felt overly majestic; I had this dream within the same timespace that I was reading the novel.

Similarly, With the Old Breed reads like a nightmare. I had a nightmare once of getting pinned with artillery exploding all around me, and later desperately reaching for a rifle to defend myself, in the same timespan of reading the book.
