>His last great philosopher was Descartes

Literally WTF went wrong? They have strong tradition in math, so I expect more from them.

Nothing went wrong. It's just that Hegel and Marx provided a solution of philosophy.

This post is deeply ironic in the sense that Grothendieck was quite straight and had like five kids by three different women. But this (and their different disciplines) were the major differences between the two.

-similar looks during the 1960s
-batshit crazy leftists
-France-based academics
-nearly birth cohorts, born within two years of each other

Grothendieck was just the based good guy to Foucault's prancing la-la homo man. He (Grothendieck) even pulled a Luke Skywalker when he quit math and fucked off to the Pyrenees.
Toward the end of his life, Grothendieck was even tracked down and interviewed (sort of) by a young, awkward female grad student, and Grothendieck went back over the basics of why he quit and politely asked her to go away. I have my suspicions that one of the Star Wars writers was aware of this story and incorporated the idea into the recent flicks.

To be fair, growing up in the border between French and Germany during WW2 would make most people antiwar.
Grothendieck also worked something like 20 hours a day during his peak, what probably contributed to his mental breakdown.
