Can something written in prose be considered an "epic"? Sometimes you see big, long works, like War & Peace, called "epic", but are they truly an epic if they're not in verse?

Technically any great story can be an epic, and that's all ἐπῐκός literally means in Ancient Greek: of words, storied. In practice all of the heroic stories in Ancient Greece were told and recalled in verse, but they're not making any new Ancient Greeks, so the word evolved.
