How often do you guys buy actual books instead of just reading pdfs?

>> No.15150354

I only read pdfs of work that is legally published online such as certain phd theses and some essays

Otherwise I just buy books

>> No.15150355

I only buy textbooks. The rest I pirate and read on my kindle. The exception is if I find a truly exceptional book like Anna Karenina and I want to read it again, I buy a physical copy.

I want to stop spending money on books but I hate reading on screens, something about it just doesn't hold my attention the same way

I buy books if I find them much cheaper than in ebay/amazon

There are certain books where a physical copy is preferred. Infinite Jest is sometimes regarded as such a one, although the use of hyperlinks with the footnotes in the electronic edition makes navigation easier for some.

There are some works where it pays (and this is part of the fun) to create copious marginalia, one such book this is ideal for is Finnegans Wake by that most obscure Irish author Jimmy Joyce. Building up your notes within the book itself for subsequent rereads is such a delight and continuously renews the wonderful narrative.

My family never know what to buy me for presents so I give them booklists. Sometimes if I've pirated a pdf from a non-public domain writer and thought highly of it I'll ask for the physical book just to pay the author back.

I never read from PDFs unless they are very short or just for reference. Real books should always be read as real books.

The last book I did this with was "Endgame Challenge" by John Nunn, which is 250 chess studies. It's very good and must have taken him many hours of work. Not ALL new books are trash.

I buy books if I can afford them, because I like having a collection that I can stack and work through, like a visable backlog. If the work is too expensive though, I go pdf. It's been the only way I can read Shakespeare since the Norton and Pelican editions are so pricey.

I buy a lot in cheap second-hand bookstores. They are, well, cheap and you can buy fine classic stuff there. Plus buying an old book someone owned and read before is pleasant in a way. Like a small piece of history.
