The Catcher In The Rye may not be my favourite novel, it may not even be in my top fifty, but I do like it and I think it has many merits.

I will also defend it against a very unfair criticism that is often thrown at it. Many people hate it, and completely fail to understand Holden Caulfield's disposition.

Lot's of people hate Holden because he is such a miserable bastard.

But they fail to understand that the reason he is so cynical is because he is deeply depressed, because he has never overcome his younger brother's death. The reason he is so particularly disgusted by adult life is because the thing he values more than anything is his dead brother, who as a young child was perfectly innocent, and hence he values innocence above everything else, and this is why he is so disparaging of the adult world.

TCITR is a study into the mind of a depressed, grieving adolescent. If you don't understand that you're a fucking dipshit.

>younger brother's death.
Nope, looks like you just got a part of it. You fail to include the suicide of the classmate and the possible (probable) molestation.

Yup those are two other important influences. They all play into it. I still think the brother's death is the core of his misery though, but either way fucking reddit Normies who find it annoying how miserable he is cos they think he's a brat deserve to be put against a wall and shot in the head.

y...you good anon?

It may not be your favorite novel, but it is the greatest novel. No author has been able to go beyond what Salinger created since Catcher first published. It is a perfect book.

I finished reading this book a couple of days ago and I quite enjoyed it.
Sure it's not my favourite but I still liked it.
What other Salinger works are worth checking out, any recs?

Literally every other work is better than Catcher. They're denser, though, minus 9 stories.

while anon above is being ridiculous it is underrated by a lot of people because it's the highschool book and so many people hate Holden. It really is very well written.

not by any means. It's one of the most popular, lauded, and read classics of the last 100 years. Of the country, even.

I'm 100 serious. Name a better book.

I know the book is not generally underrated, it's probably too prominent for its own good. But among people who read a lot there is a trend of disliking it it seems.

Why do you care what trends people reading entry-level lit follow? You're seeking out unintelligent conversations and then getting mad at their unintelligence. Come on, now.

The ending is the most interesting part of this book

Sometimes it's just pretty depressing to realise how utterly alone you are. Pearls before swine, where only you can see their beauty.

Wrong again. Man, y'all suck at this book. The most interesting part is when the pimp beats him up and he starts crying about his brother.

If not that, then it's the scene with the kids on the ride reaching for the golden ring.

Yeh this is the thing, morons are forced to read it in school and inevitably they hate it.

Oh, get off the cross, we need the wood. It's a wildly, wildly popular book, and people have much stronger, more developed, and more beautiful thoughts on it than you do.
