He's been changing his life around. He's been lifting and spending hours at a time meditating in caves while working on his new novel "Leave Society" which will be published by Vintage in either 2020 or 2021. Follow his twitter for more updates.

Rich Asian Americans seem to engage in the least self-aware behaviors. A crappy imitation of The Beats. The whole-sick crew alive and unwell through vapid materialism trying to understand mysticism.

Maybe he feels this, for the same reason the original beats did, and maybe he doesn't let others' perceptions, or the possibility of entering cliche stop him from acting on what he feels.

Were you part of the alt lit scene when it was all blogs? Or do you mean the Taipei era /lit/ memeing? Or do you mean reading Richard Yates and Shoplifting? Where were you in your life when you were reading Tao Lin? Curious.

How is the book coming, Tao? Have you had to revise it greatly because of Corona? How do you write in the midst of the plague drama?

Are you implying that Tao Lin has the same feeling of societal rejection and alienation as The Beats? Guys who grew up in Americas most culturally repressive time, comparable to a 30 something established author just now realizing that drugs and shoplifting is vapid and boring? I said crappy imitation because it's just The Beats sans everything that made them interesting for their time. Yeah I can't wait to see what taking Adderall and thinking about Buddha does that'll be so fucking insane!!!

>> No.15124894

I don't think he is trying to imitate the beats and I don't think his work resembles the beats. You are charging him with the crime of "not being the beats". Ok. I get it. You like the beats, and modern well off hipsters are not mythologically pure enough to fill their boots. What is Tao supposed to do, stop writing altogether because he'll never be as beatnik as the beats?

He seems kino, I went through some of his twitter and found a bunch of non mainstream health stuff. Saw he reads Mishima too. I don’t care for nationalism but I’ve had the same experience that he’s talking about, where you realize most of your emotional problems stem from being physically unhealthy. He’s also not completely caught up in physical stuff, unlike how some unfortunately dig their hole by thinking everything has to do with physical health. I saw he’s controversial which also seems good but this thread seems to be making fun of him so idk if I should buy the books or not

Is he really worth reading? What should I start with

I was a bit young to read his Brooklyn hipster stuff when it was zeitgeisty and I got into him by reading Trip for a straightforward psychedelic book but really liked his writing style and moved backward through Taipei, Shoplifting from american apparel, and Richard Yates

Its a hit or miss with most people. His writing is very dry and minimalist but sometimes it hits you in the right spot. He also mentions /lit/
