I've only read a couple of the Rougon-Macquart series but I'd certainly like to read more. Apparently character traits get passed down between generations and you appreciate these patterns the more you read.
I think the storytelling could be better sometimes but nobody writes Paris like Zola.

My absolute favorite part was the bit with the underage prostitute that has to sleep with 100 men every night to pay off her debts
