I can barely read. I see the words on the page, my eyes move over them, I say them one by one, yet when I get to the end of the sentence there’s nothing in my brain. I didn’t comprehend a single word.

It takes immense mental energy for me to read the words one at a time across a page, in fact I devote all my mental energy to just doin that task and there’s no brainpower left to actually understand the words, it’s all used in keeping me moving left to right and reading the words. My natural inclination upon coming upon a large page of text is to scan it all over with my eyes in no obvious pattern or direction, up, down, diagonally across the page. My brain doesn’t feel like it was designed to read, I scan everything instead of reading it sequentially. It’s like I’m searching for something on the horizon.

I will never amount to anything in life because I can’t read. My brain is total shit. I am worthless and a complete failure in every sphere of human life.

The problem is fren is you dont know who you're. You identify with body and mind therefore all problems of body and mind seem real, if you are grounded in wellbeing of awareness there is no problem

Counter-inutitive but try to read faster and have trust in your ability to unterstand. Going word by word makes it harder on yourself. Look up speedreading, it will help you. Also stop beating yourself up. Reading is a habit and a skill so give yourself the time to master it and don't rush. Start with reading something night that actually interests you. When you read more you can move on to more difficult works.

Try following along with a ruler or some kind of straight edge to keep your pace consistent and the other words out of your sight

Don't beat yourself up OP. Be kind to yourself. Reading takes practice like anything else. Do you exercise? What's your diet like? Getting regular exercise clears your head and makes it easier to concentrate on things I find.

You can do it fren, you just need to practice.

Do you maybe have something that makes reading harder like dyslexia?

The fuck are you reading, OP? I hope you didn't fall for the Greeks meme.
Remember that episode of Arthur where we find out Buster has never finished a book in his life, but then he reads Robin Hood even faster than Arthur, and he realizes he just hadn't been reading books that interested him?
There's plenty of fun stuff of literary merit. Try a few novellas; I recommend Tortilla Flat.

If you’re reading the comments in this thread, you’re perfectly capable of reading. What’s more likely is you’ve conditioned yourself with poor concentration and attention due to years of using a computer, phone, etc.

Actually, focusing on each individual word is the wrong way to go about it. That’s basic reading comprehension and once you have about a elementary reading level, that will do more harm than good because it’s breaks up sentence structure. You focus so much on the finger that you miss the moon which it is pointing to.

Try reading a better fast focusing on clusters of words or full sentence. The idea is you want to turn on the part of your brain that digests information as if you’re having a conversation or watching a movie. Don’t get hung up on a word, swallow it hole in your brain and keep moving because the words around it give it context. Try that OP fast from the internet and video games for a while. Keep reading. I think it’s highly likely that at solves your issue at least in part. Other than just build up from less difficult to more difficult books over time.

>diagonally across the page. ... I scan everything instead of reading it sequentially.

Is this really a problem? I do this when reading academic papers and get bored because the author starts repeating their point with a new analogy so I scan for them to get back on the point I care about.

In fiction it doesn't happen if the plot is interesting but if I start to scan through a boring part I might back scan for main character names or dialogue and then just say fuck it if they were describing a mountain for two pages.

It’s hard to explain. The realization in day to day life faded over time and I have a hard time now caring about things like my job, etc.
