Is a phd in the humanities worth it? Can you make a livable wage working in the arts?
Or should I just succumb to the STEM meme and take Comp Sci.

If you get into a good phd program, they will pay you as you are getting it (not much though) so it isn't that bad an idea if you are actually smart.

Why is it always comp sci with you faggots? I can't think of a more horrible subject to force yourself through.

don't succumb to the STEM meme. study what makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. fuck any soulless bugman utilitarian that says otherwise

Just double major/minor. One for a career that you'd enjoy and fund a lifestyle you love, the other to permit critical engagement with the world. Plenty of people I know did that and have successful lives. As well, if you want to pursue a later career in the humanities, many scholars appreciate the ability to be cross disciplinary. Never assume an either/or.

phd in the humanties meant. you sucked ass in your field and now u become a faggot professor teaching students your failed methods

>Is a phd in the humanities worth it?
NO. There are far more humanities PhDs than there are humanities professor jobs. Many humanities PhDs are fighting just to get jobs as adjunct professors, and the pay on those is so often bad you might as well teach high school.

You're giving up anywhere from 4-8 years of your life to live a meager existence. While you're living in a crappy apartment making poverty level money your friends will be getting married, buying houses, and having kids.

You can make a livable wage with anything. Sell insurance if you have to, the money's not bad.
As a graduate of the humanities with no regrets, it sounds like it might not be for you. I chose it (philosophy) because I wanted it and couldn't stand to do anything else. It's been great. Say what you will of academia, it's not even that I learned much from my teachers. There's just a unique effect of being immersed in the environment. The pace, structure, breadth of exposure, interaction with colleagues. If you're into a subject you'll have a good time with it.

But the fact that you're debating between a PhD in one diverse set of fields and a completely different diverse set of fields makes this kind of dubious. You should only consider getting a PhD after you've locked down an area of interest and even then it's hard to make that decision.
So if you're casually interested in a PhD, I'd say you should be able to devote the time to just taking classes and exploring subjects and see what >>15115826 makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. But if you're making your decision based on what's likely to make you money you probably won't make a good decision. Outside of shit like engineering, nothing is guaranteed and everything is fair game.

What'd you focus in?
What kind of work were you looking for? Was it really "anything" or were you just looking to teach at university rather than community college or something offbeat?

I wish I did this instead of wasting my time on an economics degree. Now, I feel like I have to get a PhD in something else to correct for my shitty choice since I can’t erase it.

It's your own fault for not having a passion for geoscience.

That's because you have no idea what it is. I'm not even in comp sci, I'm a pure mathematician. But a strong comp sci program is about exceptionally deep in abstraction whilst still being useful. Good computer scientists are incredibly smart people... but most of them are in the field so they can get a wage-slave dev job after university.
