I'm actually concerned with writing in spanish, my mother tongue and native language, but I felt that it was unnecessary to include that fact into the topic since the question is general: does one need to have good grammar to write in good prose?

the production of language is an unconscious skill that does not rely on conscious knowledge of descriptions of language. so you don't need to be able to recite grammar rules, but you need to have internalized what "good prose" sounds like by reading a lot of it.

I'd say that you'd also need some understanding of how prose works synthesized from what you've read and your own experiences writing but I'm guessing you're just saying he'll get that from reading enough assuming he isn't retarded

If you want to write literature, yes. If you want to write for money, no.
You can't play with language at a meaningful level if you don't know the rules and how to bend or even break them, properly.

so does this mean one needs to have a "conscious" (>>15089197)
use of the skill in order to write literature?

>>15089393
Yes. It will even make you a better reader.

I mean I'd say the folk art equivalent of prose would still count as literature despite lack of formal training, anon isn't a schizo though so that's out
