What does /lit/ think of video game and traditional game novels?

You mean like Facade?

I like Facade.

I mean novels based off/set in the same universe as video games. A popular example being Fall of Reach.

So not like William Gibson's Pattern Recognition?

I don't really like video game novels, but that's mostly because I don't tend to read sci-fi and fantasy and that's what they generally are. Video games also tend to not to be A+ plotwise. Not that I don't like video games, but I play video games for different reasons than why I read.

This is about my opinion. I never feel video game novels are particularly well-written. Same issue with traditional game novels, even though pen-and-paper games tend to have better writing associated.

video games=good

literature=good

video game literature=bad

they just don't add up

>> No.1508385

It's the same form of media as movie-adapted novels which generally tend to be contrived (obviously) and consequently pretty bad.

I'm not really sure if exceptions apply because I'm not fully immersed in the genre, but I do remember that the Halo/Covenant whatever series wasn't too shabby.

Video game novels are kitsch.

How about games based on novels?
e.g. Metro 2022, The Witcher, LoTR

>> No.1508403

I own the first Splinter Cell novel, but I've never read it.

I've heard that the Dragon Age novel and the Dead Space novel are both pretty good, but I haven't read those, either.

I really wish that the Oblivion novel was better. It seems like it would be pretty easy to make a good adventure novel in the Oblivion universe. Ehhh.

I don't have any personal experience in that, though I'd imagine they'd be a bit better at least, seeing as the novel isn't at the mercy of the usually mediocre writers of video games.
