I read The Fifth Head of Cerberus and didn't like it. It felt like I was just reading a puzzle, like the fancy prose wasn't in service of anything meaningful, but just being obscure in order to trick less astute readers. I'd compare it to a pulp mystery novel or something, or even less since it doesn't ever actually tell you whodunnit since you have to be clever enough to figure it out yourself. I don't like having to approach a book as an adversary, if you follow.

I understood the book perfectly well and confirmed my interpretation using an interview with Gene Wolfe that I Found. Did I gain something from this exercise, some greater empathy or understanding of life or humanity? No, it was a complete waste of time. This is a prime example of what "genre fiction" and "pulp" is.
