What's /his/'s opinion of the guy? I read fear and loathing and the rum diaries, pretty good books imo

Good at capturing experiences with psychedelics, but all the drugs fucked him up long-term and ruined his writing.

Plebs only know him as a drug writer when it's his political journalism that's actually top shelf.

He has some really good and insightful work. Unfortunately the persona that he created in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which made him famous also ruined him. He even made the comment himself to where he could no longer go anywhere without someone recognizing him. Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail is honestly better than Las Vegas and the collection of his journalistic works are also great reads.

I like his journalism. Never bothered with his books.
Anybody read Transmetropolitan? It's an interesting exploration/expansion of Thompson's character.

Warren Ellis wrote that he was once offered a chance to meet Thompson, but turned it down because he didn't want to ruin the image of him in his head.

He was entertaining and had a fun style. A lot of writers envy his success, I remember reading in the New Yorker a short story by David Schickler where he wants to fuck his HS student. It starts with them making a connection where they both mention not liking Hunter Thompson and he treats it as a sign of intellect. It was shoe horned in and douchy.

You should read the Curse of Lono. It's probably the last good thing he wrote. If you prefer his more journalistic side then try The Great Shark Diaries.

He is deeply underrated on this board, especially considering the obvious influence he’s had on Tao Lin.

Taipei is essentially fear and loathing but instead of offending hookers it’s awkwardly talking to girls at parties, and instead of getting kicked out of hotel bars it’s stealing shit from Whole Foods

I love his writting style, combining the Gonzo style with those crazy characters and sketches that fill his books is very innovative. Probably one of the best thing to come out of flower power.
Can anyone recommend another auther who works in the Gonzo style?
