I think it's because literature (and art as a whole) is not considered manly by lots of men out there. It involves feelings and stuff. A boy (and a grown man) should be involved in sports and serious business, not fiction books or movies or paintings or music. Women don't have to worry about this, it's expected of them to be into this shit, so they read more.

Also, if you ask a random person how much they read a day, most will answer close to zero, it's just a group of out(liars) shitting up the statistic.
If there are nine 10 gram rocks then the average mass is 10, but when you add one 100 gram rock, the average becomes 19 i.e. almost double.
