Is House of Leaves brilliant and intimate or pretentious and bloated?

I thought I had just read an emotional novel, but I can’t tell if I can recommend it to anyone with how much it asks from the reader

It was fun and unique. If someone is looking for something different than your every day novel, then suggest it to them. People are generally scared of new things, so don't bring it up unless people are looking for something like it.

it's about the same level as an a24 horror movie

I wanted to be spooked, not stupid postmodern drama.

I get what you mean - I thought it was gonna be a straight horror, but I was pleasantly surprised with how wholesome it was

it was a fun read

deep down, House of Leaves is much more of a romance than it is a horror

Anyone read any of his other works? I think House only worked for me because of the characters and simple story of a marriage at the heart of it - I don’t think I could sit through the narrative insanity if it wasn’t for that

I dunno. But I remember checking out this book at 13. My dad curiously snatches it up one day and asks "What's this book about?", and happens to turn to the exact page with a very detailed description of fucking a black girl.

You know what, that still requires less explanation than a mess of references within references and red ‘minotaur’s and son why is there four bookmarks in this book son stop screaming you’re going back to your mothers in Idaho

It was fun. I've never complained about another book where I had to flip back and forth between the annotations in the back after reading this. The bit with the blue square in the middle about 120 in were tedious, but the Tom monologue bits were always my favourite.

It's decent altfic but it's hardly literary.

It's basically found footage set to prose. Perfectly fine midbrow core
