Most of us are pretty misanthropic, so it figures that he's a favorite here. Also he's one of very few authors you can find on numerous sites with overwhelming positive reviews vs. negatives ones.
If his sense of humor clicks with you, you'll love it. If it doesn't, you won't.
OP don't read this, it really is a spoiler.
Also the ending was great, everything Ferdinand said in the book is personified in the events leading up to and during Robinson's death, and his own uselessness during it even though he's a medical doctor is brilliantly depicted.

Robinson is likely my favorite character in all of literature. Ferdinand is a hero to me, even though he probably shouldn't be. I love how he gets all depressed on the train when there aren't any beautiful women.
