I've read lots of things, mostly classics, and I liked them all but I don't remember shit except maybe essential plot details of books I was particularly fond of. Is this normal?

Yep it's normal
If it bothers you, you should try reading with a pen and taking notes

>> No.14982933

its normal. I like to believe that although we rarely remember all the full facts and details of the story, we retain the wisdom and value just by reading and understanding the text

that is why you reread

Take notes and write yourself a little something afterwards. I make wikipedia edits, primarily to benefit my own retention of what I've read, far less to "improve the encyclopedia".

yes but reading them HABITUALLY over a long period of time will unconsciously affect your behavior, personality, imagination, c&. if you read 2 books a year and forget them both its not gonna get you anywhere

I just remember whatever fits into my worldview.

The point is the experience, as gay as that sounds. So if you can remember the "feelings" you felt while reading, you're good.

This. Memory is based off feelings

You need to look up Yates 'The Art of Memory' and practice learning books and verses you value by repeating them aloud to yourself. This is how people memorise literature.

This is legit helpful. Thank you anon.

Sometimes I know, or feel, a book is one of my favourites, but just as often forget the plot. I suppose it shows human memory, but also that a good book isn't about plot but the emotion captured.

Yes it's normal. Hopefully you gained some insight while you were reading it
