To put this into perspective, US Patent laws guarantee exclusive IP rights for 20 years.

I think there should be a stipulation added though where it allows free distribution, however it would not allow monetary gain from said distribution outside of the copyright holder's existing IP. For example, should copyright simply disappear after 20 years, the market could just as easily be flooded with copy after copy after copy and so on due to the incentives of money. However, simply allowing the free distribution after a set timeframe would do better to protect the consumer's sanity among other things.

At least in STEM, close to 100% of all published papers will be contributed to by at least one grad student working under the professor who knows how computers work and is pissed about research paywalls. Most of them have the majority of their actual content written by grad students as well.
Reputable universities pay all the journal fees and get them past the paywalls anyway, but it's often still more convenient and faster to find articles on pirate sites and every grad student I've ever discussed the topic with is strongly opposed to the journal gougers on a moral level so they'll intentionally try to fuck them over.

I buy books because I like the feel and intimacy of reading a physical book, and because I'm a Kaczynskite/Ellulian, but preferably used books. Another reason why buy hard copies is if there is an author that I like whose ouvre is mostly unavailable in my language, like Julius Evola and Ernst Junger, and I want to support the publisher/translator as encouragement to translate and publish more works from that author.
