Plato figured out that truth is understood through the universal, since only in the universal can diverse particulars be connected in a way that communicates their being. But if the universal is that in which particulars are truly one, then particulars are merely approximations of the universal. Hence he concludes not that the particulars are unreal, but that they must be seen in light of a first principle, which is more real than they. He's affirming reality and the possibility of knowing it, not denying it.
