It was a slowly growing phenomenon, Poe's law has a lot of truth here. Some events, like you say, had a huge effect, a massive wave of new anons came here in search of a place where you could say nigger freely. The restoration of /pol/ was probably the biggest one, it centralized a lot of like-minded people.
