this is obviously justified given how different it is from "are not" and "is not." It's not a phonetic spelling, it's a different word altogether

It's a based stylistic choice to learn what Amerimutts spoke like back them.

>The narrator's voice is transcribed in correct English.
>A character's voice is spelled out for the reader.

Why? I already know where a character is from. The southern U.S., or India, or France, or wherever. I am already subvocalizing them with an accent.

It makes works tedious and basically unreadable. Faulknerheads are confirmed douchebags.

And you think everyone in the 1920s knew how Southern Amerimutts spoke? Or even in the current year? It's ridiculous. Also not every character has the same accent, if you've read Faulkner you should know this. And the fact that you'd give a peasant the same "accent" as an aristocrat only proves why his system works.

I'm American. I know what a southern accent is. I know what a Cockney accent is. I'm familiar with accents.

It's Faulkner who is condescending to his sheltered WASP and general midwit audience ruining what could be god-tier literature for the rest of us.

Why bros? Why did he have to do us like that?

My girlfriend has spoken highly of at least two books that do this, I was diven off immediately when I saw a single page written like that.
It's generally fine when it's a minory tertiary character doing it but it seems unbearably obnoxious reading a narrator written like that. Also even when it is minor characters (like the zookeeper in Dracula) I have difficulty parsing what the fuck they're actually saying, like OP's "they god".
