What are some deep, complex fantasy books? Stuff like Book of the New Sun and Second Apocalypse?

Why is the new sun complex or deep?
Its just fantastical with a random, desultory narrative
I loved it at times but the inconsistency with the world was a bit much

Oh and try little, big
The first third is amazing, goes downhill after that, but worth the read for the first part alone

The narrative made it complex in my opinion. The fact that it doesn't hold your hand and encourages you to draw your own conclusions about what is going on was really fun in my opinion.

Le Guin seems like the Sontag of the science fiction world. She always there for the important cover blurbs and prefaces

I loved book of the new sun. I read the lotr trilogy in middle school. But I'm having trouble with this. I appreciate the writing, but I'm just not really into what's going on. I'm at the part where steerpike is staging his rescue at the library. What am i missing?

I was mostly pulled in by the language and how well Peake rotates through such a large group of characters. Post-library sepeulchrave's descent into madness is fantastic, as is swelter and Flay's rivalry

Thanks for the reply. I'm too stubborn to put out down even though I'm having trouble staying interested. I was just wondering if there was a problem with my understanding (beyond my attention span).

No problem, I will say that post-library it becomes more interesting, but I find behavior very interesting in the first place.
I don't know if you care about spoilers, but the "duel" in Titus Alone is very well executed, vividly capturing the amateurish motions of those involved.

ASOIAF, obviously, but I'll still mention it. Not like Wolfe is a hidden gem, either.
