Why do average people feel justified bashing established classics? I can't stand that every single major work has to have some naysayer going on about how its "overrated" or whatever nonsense catchall criticism. Why do these people think they've somehow discovered the emperor's wearing no clothes and everything we know about literature will topple because of their stirring analysis of the book's gay and boring content? Why do they think they know better than critics and scholars who've spent their lives at this kind of thing?

Yes indeed, who allowed those damn peasants to have opinions anyway?!

What the fuck is this? This is /b/ level posting.

I'm honestly interested in this aspect of literature culture. Is this a problem with how literature is written? How it's taught? Or is this an ever-present problem? If so, how do we get these people to shut up and go away?

You think that everyone should defer to the taste of literary critics, as if all literary critics share the same opinion? You don't see why people on /lit/, a literature discussion board, might disagree with you?

Tell us 1) what you think the "established classics" are 2) why you think we shouldn't express our opinions about them.

Because the age of intellectual authority was 100 years ago. Personal opinion is now celebrated as the lodestone of truth. Just gotta deal with it.

Of course my thread gets misinterpreted and this becomes some kind of subjectivity debate. I give up.

>You think that everyone should defer to the taste of literary critics, as if all literary critics share the same opinion?
I do? Nice job putting words in my mouth. You show that strawman who's boss!
>You don't see why people on /lit/, a literature discussion board, might disagree with you?
Yeah, that strawman was a total faggot. Go us!
>Tell us 1) what you think the "established classics" are
That's besides the point, silly.
>2) why you think we shouldn't express our opinions about them.
Oooh, more strawmen! Let's knock those meanies down!

>>1493587
This post is reasonable, but I can't help but think the whole "every opinion counts" shtick is very superficial and half-hearted. There's still a firm distinction between scholar and student, one that I don't think will ever go away.

Let's try this again. My complaint wasn't with different opinions than the authority. My complaint was with a lack of respect towards opinions. There's a difference between "I didn't like this book" and "This book is bad."

There are people who intelligently and respectfully criticize established works. There are also people who say meaningless negative comments that offer nothing.

I was speaking of the latter group in the OP, and apparently wasn't clear enough. Sorry for the inconvenience.

It's too big of a movement to simply laugh at it. I consider it to be a real threat to the arts. There needs to be a way to either silence the movement (unlikely) or make amends with it.

I mostly agree with you, OP. But then, when you look at the range of retarded opinions people have on everything from science to religion, you understand.

>> No.1493694

People should not be belligerent asses over their opinion, agreed.
However, as long as you're not disagreeing with popular opinion just to be contrary, and you have reasons to back up your opinion (even though most of enjoyment of books comes down to personal preference), you shouldn't be expected to just smile & nod, agreeing that a book is great if you don't feel it is.
Haven't you ever spend hours reading a book everyone praises, only to decide it was a waste of your time? Don't you want to share your opinion so that other people don't make the same mistake, potentially? It's likely your opinion won't deter them, but you offer it up as more information
