Cosmos discussion:
I thought it was an ass hat move to include undertones that there was a creator, but despite that good book.

>> No.1493368

Why ?

It's not like it was a book trying to disprove god.

Sagan believed god is the universe, and we each contain the universe in us, so we are god.

No one ever said Sagan was atheist you dumb fuck

You just described pantheism. Sagan wasn't pantheist, he was agnostic.

>> No.1494607

Actually, he described "panentheism", not pantheism. There's a difference.

Sagan didn't believe in God:

"Sagan once asked Rev. Joan Campbell, general secretary of the National Council of Churches, "You're so smart, why do you believe in God?" Campbell retorted to Sagan, "You're so smart, why don't you believe in God." - http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/politics_conservative/9227

Yes, precisely as I said: Sagan didn't believe in God.

(Just to add, without wanting to open the atheism v agnosticism debate but willing to, Athiest tranalsates from the Latin as "Without God".)

He didn't do much science. But he helped the layman understand many science topics and motivated lots of children to pursue the stars.

Again, as I said, Sagan did not believe in God.

And while he refers to himself as an agnostic, it is clear he is not. He is playing politics here at best and, at worst, using words deceptively to gain hand.

His definition of agnostic as provided is woefully inadequate: ". . . somebody who doesn't believe in something until there is evidence for it."

Well under this definition I am agnostic about unicorns. And green frogs. And whether I am a brain in a jar. It is precisely because there is no evidence for these things, that I don not believe they pertain. Which is to say, I believe they do not pertain.

Sagain was exactly the same about God. He believed from the lack of evidence that God did not exist.

This is not agnosticism in any meaningful sense of the word.

(I respect Sagan and think "The Demon Haunted World" is a classic of pop-science.)
