Le Petit Prince is a good one to start with; the French is really easy but it's got quite a substantial plot.
As for L'étranger, the language isn't particularly hard either, but it's best to ease yourself in.

I was able to read L'étranger when I was in high school after only three semesters in French, and I wasn't even close to fluency. It's really not hard at all to keep up with; the language is simple and sentences are generally pretty short.

Personally, I'd recommend the Stuart Gilbert translation.

Though the original French is the best.
