Can we talk Wittgenstein here? I know we have a small population of people on /lit/ that dislike his work; could someone please share with me some criticisms? The interpretations I've been taught of some of his basic ideas fascinate me. Also, I find that his life allures me as well.

The Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is the only book of analytic philosophy that I have read so far, so I am far from a seasoned philosopher, but I liked it a lot. I found it very well reasoned. The only thing that I didn't fully agree with was the limits he put on philosophy. He seemed to think that no explicit knowledge could come from philosophy; while that may be true of logic, I think we can learn things from other philosophic disciplines.

If you want a collection of good analytic papers, I suggest getting Ammerman's Classics of Analytic Philosophy.

Wittgenstein is an awesome philosopher. There has been some backlash against him in recent decades, but he is one of the few genuine contenders for best philosopher of the 20th century.

He doesn't just place limits on it though, those limits follow from the conception of language he develops in the book. And the problem is much deeper than simple skepticism about philosophy. Pretty much the whole of philosophical discourse (including the Tractatus, e.g. the ladder to be kicked away) ends up being senseless given the conditions for meaningful thought and language he develops. It's kinda hard to see how you could find it well reasoned and yet disagree with the whole conclusion of the book.

Ole Witty was too deep for me. I had to go back to reading nietzche
